Power Steering Pump Leak

I noticed a very slow seepage from my power steering pump. It SEEMS to be coming from the front seal. I noticed that seal is an available replacement part. Anyone ever done this? The pump works fine otherwise and makes no noise. I'd hate to spend 200+ if I don't have to. Thanks.

There is a special tool to pull off the pulley and another to put it back on. If you can rent one from a parts store it isn't a big deal to replace just the seal. Once the pulley is off I usually run a small self tapping screw into the seal and pull on it to get the seal out.

Thanks for the response. I'm pretty sure its that seal but is there some sort of seal between the resevoir and pump that can go bad? Thanks.

There is an o-ring between the resevoir and the pump, it usually is not an issue but if you are going to remove the pump it can't hurt to replace that o-ring too.

Short of a new unit what you can replace as far as fluid sealing goes are the o-rings on the lines, the o-ring between the resevior and pump and the shaft seal. Get them all if you are going to remove the pump to replace anything.

Alright, I replaced the rusted and leaking p/s cooler yesterday. Now its time to address that p/s pump. If I decide to just get another pump, is a rebuilt unit from Napa acceptable? The GM unit is insanely expensive. I may just replace it because the resevoir is pretty rusty looking.

Also, is there some sort of EVO or variable power steering device on the pump I need to worry about?? I can't really tell from above if the current pump has one. Thanks.
