Box for 2 10" subs under rear seat in crew cab?

Does anyone know of an existing box for 2 10" in subs that will fit under the rear seat in a 2002 2500HD Crew Cab?  I have looked around but can't find one ready-made.  I'd rather not build it myself but I can if it is the last resort.

 

What have other Crew Cab owners done?

I don't recall ever seeing a premade box for a crew cab. Most likely you'll have to build it. isn't that hard with the right tools, then you can build it to the specs of the subs you want.

Let me know what you do.  I have 2 10" subs and the amp & cap just sitting in the closet.  

 

It will have to be very custom, due to the frame work on the rear seats, and the limited space there.  I have my amps behind the rear seat, so that area is unavailable to me.

If I have to build it myself, here's my thoughts:

 

The largest space is on the driver's side and the material covering the underside of the seat can be pushed up very easily which means I should be able to build a box that is a little taller than what "appears" to be the available height and just let the box push the fabric up a bit.  Let's see if I can 'splain this....

 

The sub would face forward on a slope so it's actually pointing up a bit toward the driver's back.  Here's the dimensions I was thinking about (but I haven't calclulate exact volume yet):

 

front 12.5"H X 12.5"W (sloped to accomodate a 10" sub)

back 5" X 12.5"

bottom 12.5"W x 16"(?)D

top 12.5"W x approx 13"D (haven't calculated exact angle of front slope yet)

 

If that doesn't make sense how 'bout this:

Take a Kicker-style box designed for behind the seat of a truck, tip it forward until it is laying face down on the speaker, now turn it around 180 degrees.  What used to be the bottom of the box is now angled slightly up, facing forward and this is the side I would mount the sub on.

 

I need to put the math together to accurately caculate the volume.  The dimensions mentioned above may actually be too big according to specs I read.  Most 10" subs need about .8 cubic feet for a sealed box.

 

Does this make sense?

 

Has anyone used a free-air sub?

You said you have your amps behind the seat (but your sub amp is sitting in the closet.  So what have you done so far?

 

I'm trying to decide if I should just add a 4 channel amp to the OEM stereo or if I should buy a new one with 25 watts per channel and forego the amp for the main speakers.

don't plan on running upgraded speakers on deck power, its just mean. you are always better off using an external amp to power any speaker. but if cost is a problem do what you have to. i know i have before.

 

if you wanted to do something "different" you could always mount the sub in the floor of the truck with the maget under it. then just enclose/seal it with something strong like some metal or something. but then you are cutting holes in the floor board and stuff.

i've also seen people port through the cab from the bed. thats always an option, unless you beat on your truck a lot and need ever bit of bed space. i use to have an idea of making something like a tool box and mounting some subs in, then getting something flexable to port into the cab with.

 

just something to think about.

I have an older Pioneer oversized (1.5 DIN) head unit, running to two seperate amps.  I am running two seta of Infinity Kappa seperates, 6.5 in the front doors, 6.75 in the rear doors.  The front door tweeters are in the stock location.  The rear tweeters are mounted about 2 inches below and slightly foward of the rear window switches, angled at opposite side paasenger's head.

 

I started to Dynamat the doors, only rears have been done to date.  Temporarily running 8 gauge wire to amps, eventually will hard-wire the 1/0 gauge, add all the connectors & fuse blocks, add the bus-bars and caps, and the sub amp.  

 

I have never built a sub enclosure, but I know I will have to since I am not willing to give up the center console.  On that note, what about building an enclosure that will fit below the dash inside the console (bucket seats)?  Some have said this was empty space, I don't know.

 

Where are you at with yours?

Oh, Hutch, forgot to add a little of my 2 cents - I don't think there is enough room under the rear seats (pushed up and all) to make the subs front-firing.  I think they will have to be down firing boxes.

I'm just in the planning stage right now, I have actually done anything.....YET.

 

...below the dash in the console.....?  I do have bucket seats but I'm not sure what area you are talking about.  Do you mean behind the cassette player?  I think that would be a lot harder than under the rear seat.

 

I thought about a down-firing sub under the rear seat but it would be awfully close to the floor.  Wouldn't it sound muffled?

The bass won't sound muffled, just need to leave air-gap between woofer & floor.  In my '99 (Classic - older style) I had the subs in a down-firing enclosure below rear jump seat (extended cab).

 

When I mentioned below dash, I meant the area below the cassette deck - all the way down on the floor (right infront of the center console compartment).  With the bench seat, this area is wide open, I know for ours, it contains ducts for the rear, but I don't know how much room there is left.

 

I took some pictures of how I mounted the tweeters in both sets of doors today, as soon as I set up a picture account I will post them.  Any ideas on who to go through for the account?

OK, downfiring might just work.  I'll draw up my box plans and see what I come up with.

 

There is a good amount of space under the console area but I worry about heat build up without much air flow.  I was thinking about mounting my amp under the middle of the rear seat.

 

As far as pictures go, most people here seem to use Picture Trail.

If you bild a box under the rear seat, you won't be able to fold it down.  Not sure if that is an issue for you or not.  My brother in law had it build behine the rear seat, 3 10's or 8's not sure now that i try and think what size he has.  he mounted hes 2 amps under the rear seat.

OK, I built my sealed sub box to fit under the left, rear seat.  The front is angled back 75 degrees with a 10 inch Infinity Kappa sub and RF Punch 300s amp bridged for 300 watts.  The box is .73 cubic feet and the sub calls for .75 cubic feet.  It is great! After putting my ideas down on paper, it was easier to design a box for a front-firing sub than a down-firing sub.  I did have to unhook the front edge of the underpinning (carpet-type fabric) under the seat but that's no big deal.  There really is a lot more space under the seat that you realize.  This particular box is a tight squeeze but the seat is still fully functional and the box does not effect the ride quality in that seat.

I found this sub box that is supposed to go behind the rear seat of a CC.  Here is another pic of the finished box. Two 10's may work if the space works out, or mounting your amp somewhere else. :D

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
