[gmt900] How To Paint The Rear Bowtie

Recommended Posts

Posted

My truck is Summit White and I would like to paint just the gold part of the rear bowtie to match. The yellow part of the bowtie is surrounded by a chrome bevel. Does anyone know if the yellow part is just double sided taped in and can be pried out and painted and then put back in or does the whole thing need to come out and taped off?

Thanks!

It's easiest to just tape it off on the truck. I actually took a large piece of wrapping paper and covered the majority of the tailgate, cutting a hole out for the bowtie. Then I did not have to tape such a large area around the bowtie.

I found my olympic white at O'reilly's.

I decided to paint the entire front bowtie instead of leaving the black ridge.

I took my tailgate off and brought it into my basement to paint it (it was raining that weekend). Used newspaper to cover it all off then did as the previous poster said, cut a hole and taped off the edges.

those actually look really good. My truck is white too, and I put in the color matched grille. For me, it was too much white so I changed it back. The white bowtie looks like just enough....Did you use a spry type from Oreilly?

If you take the time and do a search, theres a ton of posts on this already for the umpteenth time. :P:cool:

Tailgate and bezel can be sanded down and painted, or replaced with a already painted one, buy a chrome cap cover and paint and apply is another way.

Thanks guys!. Those pics look great!. Was clear coat required?

Not a lot we can do about the tailgate handle and surrounding bezel though right?

I did clear coat it. It's not required, but I think it looks a little better and makes the finish a little stronger.

Eventually, I would like to go with the white grill surround, billet grill and billet bowtie. That is all down the road after wheels, level and getting rid of the steps. For right now my wallet only allows for this :P:cool: .

As said above, you can sand the tailgate bezel down and paint it.

I never really understood why some seem to get so upset because someone might ask a question that's been asked before. It never hurts IMHO to bring a topic back to the surface once in a while. You'd be surprised how some new members might bring a fresh new approach to doing things. I'm sure every post on this site is in some way or form just another way of asking something that's been posted already. What a boring site if there were no new posts. All you had to go on was the comments someone made a year ago!. Booooo!

Also the search engine on this site seems to be lacking.

I searched for "tailgate bezel painting". and I get

Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information.

If I type "tailgate handle" I get 14 pages of various things like Backup camera bezel, etc. If I type "Tailgate handle painting" I get the same SOrry an error occurred message.

Maybe you can teach me how to use the search feature.

Thanks for taking the time..

I don't use the search feature on this site anymore. I now use Google by searching with site:gm-trucks.com some item. So, you could try site:gm-trucks.com painting bowtie

Funny thing....I just tried the google search as mentioned above and the first one I click on also has forum police Takevin spewing his words of wisdom.

yea well when you reach a certain age, you get less patience/tolerance so there!! :P:P Guess not everyone can be the internet guru! There should be in every forum for new members the most standard questions/answers post. It would cut down on repeat posts. Better words of wisdom then stupidity! If you put in other search words other then tailgate doohooky youll get hits there whiterabbit.

Not meaning to stir the pot here, but I would not have thought about painting the chevy emblem on my tailgate, nor the tailgate handle assembly, so therefore I certainly would not have been searching for the topics. Having someone ask these questions again now brought the possibilities to my attention.

IMO, it is a good thing to have these requests brought up from time to time, even if it does bring the complainers out of the woodwork. They have a right to continue to post their opposition to people not searching first, but then they have said it before, and if I wanted to read it again, I could search for the complaints.
