If you're looking for better preformance, or just an air filter w/ a million mile warranty go for a K&N.  The fiter costs around 40-50 dollars and for the install you simply remove the old one and put the new one in.  It's good for a few hp gains, but it's real selling point is that you just have to pull it out every 50,000 miles and wash it.  In the long run you'll save money.

After a while I decided that it just wasn't enough power for me so I pulled it out and got a K&N FIPK II which replaces all of your air intake components right up to the throttle body.  This gives you a great sound when you hit the gas and more notieceable hp gains.  If you run this system and drag your truck remove the front headlight to allow even more air to flow to the engine, neat trick that actually works.  It's a great mod and I highly recommend it.  The install took me about 45 minutes.

by chance do you know when the filter (stock) should be changed?

Whats the recommended interval?

If i keep my job i will probably get a K&N its really growing on me.

you should have a little meter that is attached to the air box when that says to clean it you need to clean or replace it. I dont really know how many miles they should be replaced though.

Ryan, do you have just a stock air filter?  I've got the K&N Just collecting dust, well okay it's in a bag, but it's yours if you want it.

The stock filters last around 10-15k miles I think

I think i am going to get one of the K&N kits for my truck.  Heck, i ran the first 12000 miles without a filter at all (thanks to the quality control of chevrolet!).

didn't tom do the painted cover first?

I first seen it on someone elses truck myself. :)  I have no problem at all with someone else doing the same thing on their truck as mine.  Heck, I'll even help them out however I can.  :D
