Cyl #1 Constant Misfire

Hello all, ive done ALOT of searching and cant come up with an answer. I have a 2002 k2500hd silverado with the 6.0. 136000 approximate miles. i just bought it 4 months ago and this is the first problem. it was cold this morning like usual here and i pulled my truck out the garage and it has a slight miss. kinda shaky. Service engine light blinkin like crazy at all speeds and idle with the truck warm or cold. Took it to Advance auto and got the CYL 1 MISFIRE code. So i bought new plugs and wires and a new coil and replaced it all. Still has the miss, had the code erased but it came back. Now just to be sure im right, the #1 cylinder is the drivers side closest to the radiator right? This is drivin me nuts and i dont have the time or money right now to take it to the stealership, any ideas? It seems this might be a common thing, i just dont know why #1 would be only misfiring all the time all of a sudden, any help appreciated.

... could be the crank position sensor likek Nytemare suggested.... or it could be a fuel injector not operating properly ... the Vortecs have an injection system that can be problematic when the injector nozzles start to build up deposits..

.. get a good injector flush ... if the problem persists then pull the #1 injector and take a look at it... if the nozzle at the tip looks suspect then try replacing it....

.. also while you are doing this get a fuel pressure check to confirm the fuel pump is working properly Vortecs need 60+ psi fuel pressure for the injector nozzles to work properly

yes Brandon you struck a nerve ,i worked hard at the dealer and put up with alot of crap and proud of it and a newby comes into the ask a tech forum and cracks a "joke",.it didn't seem like a joke to me but rather offence, just because you don't know how a garage works or the dealer world works ,keep your comments to yourself ,because local garages hangin on for dear life won't dare pad the bill, only the dealer rips people, blow it out your ass,

For your information genius i've worked at 4 dealerships with 14 years service with jobs ranging from a lot attendant to a service manager so dont tell me i dont know how crooked dealerships are. You might be a hard worker but dont get all sore and expect me to feel bad for you because you are a mechanic in hard times when dealers are finally being called out on the carpet because of the economy. Its unfortunate that the mechanics suffer in these times but we all have our hard times and dealerships have a track record. Ask 10 random people how they feel about an automobile dealership, you might be surprised. Suck it up crybaby, if you get all pissed off on an internet forum over me calling it a stealership, then maybe you should lighten up a little bit or get a new job. Damn im sick of hearing "poor me". Whatever...............get a sense of humor. For the rest of the guys who helped me, thank you, i really do appreciate the info, and i appreciate your opinions.

no poor mouth here ,i left the dealer life in 08 and timing is everything cause the economy does not apply to my new job ,you can't read very well for a manager ,but you are a bigger man than me cause you lipped me off,thx your a real douche ,I feel so belittled by a guy who is no tech or mgr and needs a forum to fix his POS .your an E-Bully ,,oooooo please keep going ,your doing fine at embarrassing yourself,

final rant off newbie douche

You were a service manager and don't know for sure where #1 is? Next time before you run off and spend money on a coil..... just swap it out with one from another cylinder. Might save you some $$.

Check the injector, but check the fuel pressure as Rod suggested as well. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bad crank sensor....

How do you feel about telling the service manager/ attendants your problems with your truck now txab?? Its reasons like this... not knowing where #1 is that makes it the "stealership". If proper info was passed on...rather than customer complains of noise...etc...we'd have the problems we complain about fixed quickly and relatively cheaply.

Have you ever been inside a bay at the dealer...they have stuff than would give most mechanics at small shops a heart attack when they tried to use it. I just wish those guys got more of the hourly charge GM soaks you for labor...I would feel a lot better paying 120 bones an hour than.

Fortunately for me, the dealerships I've have dealt with, have had SMs that were quite knowledgeable and have had years of experience since they had a wrenching background. Now I have seen Service Writers that were a different story. There are dealerships that are less than desirable. I agree with your point, the mech. should get a bit bigger piece of the pie in most cases.

Casting a wide net with the term stealership isn't a good thing, IMO.

No popcorn needed BTW.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
