Bumper Center Section

The center section of my bumper is chrome, I would like to go black, I see them all the time. Are they just painted black from the factory or are the chrome ones a different part and metal? Never seen a painted one in person. Can I order a painted one from the dealer? See the picture below for the section I am asking about.

Also my 2009 has the slit or opening in it, I see other GMT900's without the "air intake" opening, anyone know what's up with some having the opening and others that don't? My truck has the tow package, is this opening there for extra cooling?

Thanks

Joe

If you can find yourself a shop that will burnish the chrome, sand it, prime it and paint it for a reasonable price, go for it. I'd do the chrome surround on the grill and your bowtie at the same time. I checked at GM for my last truck and I think it was $450 or something. And the slit on the front bumper started on 09+ trucks. Sierra's and Silverado's 1500-3500 all have them now.

IMO, I'd get it all painted...IF you have the time to take it all apart, you'll save some $$$.

WOW! WOW!

Finally GM released a SILVERado in a true Silver colour. I saw a silver 2010 for the first time at the dealer today. But yours looks 10x better!!

I was thinking thae same thing about painting mine, the price of $450 is way too much. I need to get an estimate. I will be leaving the grill chrome but want that center section black!! They all must be the same part, I am not even sure if mine is metal? I will ask the body guy if he wants to swap my chrome one for painted one and do my bowtie at the same time, never know maybe has a scratched up center section?

I was looking at part SLP sells but it covers up the 2009 mail slot in the center section. I figure GM put it there for a reason, it seems to me it must be a cooling thing so I don't want to cover it up.

Yes they are all metal. Its pretty much the core of the front bumper. See if you can get it done cheap! My painter said it would be about $200 bucks to do it.
