Lock/unlock Relay Location - 03 Sierra

Recommended Posts

Need to replace the lock relays on my 03 Sierra and pulled the cover off the drivers side fuse block. While the panel cover diagram shows the location of the relays, they are not in the block. The lock works, but unlock doesn't so I know the relays must have been moved to another location. Looked at the engine compartment fuse block and also another smaller fuse block to the left of the brake pedal, but not there either. Does anyone know where GM hid the relays?

Thanks

Can you post a picture of the left panel fuse block that you were looking in originally?

I am new at attaching a photo and hope that this is viewable. Please let me know if there are problems viewing.

Thanks,

Inside the modules. I'm going to guess that your option label has code YE9. The realays are for base models without YE9 and crew cab models only. There are no relays in standard or extended cabs with YE9. If you can't find it on the label post your vin and I'll check it.

If there are no relays, what device would prompt the lock working remotely, but not the unlock. Interestingly, after not being activated for several weeks the unlock will work a couple of times, then not. Lock continues to work fine.

Thanks for your assistance.

Let's start this over. Your doors lock but do not unlock but I am seeing different things here and not enough information. Let me ask some questions and I can get you straightened out.

  • Both doors lock but do not unlock or only one?
  • If just one, which one?
  • Do they not unlock with the driver switch?
  • Do they not unlock with the passenger switch?
  • Do they not unlock with the remotes?

By the way you do have YE9 so no relays.

Problem only relates to use of the remote fob. Neither door unlocks with the fob, it only will lock the doors. Also, if use of the fob to unlock is not attempted over an extended period of time, the doors will unlock once or twice, but then will not respond to the remote fob.

There is no problem with the driver or passenger switch.

Previously I did the reprogramming process for the fob, but that did not remedy the problem. Also, the problem exists with both fobs.

Thanks for your persistence.

I see, it only relates to the remotes. Have you tried new batteries? Another thing to look at when you replace them is the metal tabs that hold the battery down are soldered to the board. Often times that connection breaks and you will get intermittant function.

The reciever for the remote function in your vehicle is the passenger door module or PDM(which is actually the passenger door switch assembly). Once the PDM recieves the signal the rest of the system acts the same way as if the door lock button on the passenger door were touched manually. Every thing follows the same electrical path. That being the case any search for fuses or relays would be a waste of your time since every thing works normally from inside the vehicle.

There is basically 3 things that can be wrong at this point. Either there is an issue with the remotes (batteries bad, connection broken or fob's just plain worn out). There could be a programming issue with the PDM that could be fixed with a reflash of the module. There was an issue in 03 that required a reflash of the PDM but the symptom was usually full lock up of the module causing no remote function, window operation, or passenger mirror operation. The last thing that could be wrong is an internal problem with the module that would require replacement. Obviously the cheapest of these routes and basically the only one you can do without some seriously expensive equipment is replace either the batteries or the remotes themselves.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions about this.
