Huge Clunk In 4wd

Blindice

Question

Posted

I am having issues with my 4wd. I can, not put my truck in 4H unless I stop. I can't even move 10km/hr and do it without grinding. If I stop and put in 4wd it engages just find and works until I turn sharp or put it underload like going through heavy snow. Once I do that the best i can explain it is it feels like it is winding up and then a huge very loud clunk like it is releasing. when I am turning sharp at time I can get 3 or 4 clunks one after another. Any one had this problem before and know what part I need to get changed? I just don't want to to take it in and change something that is not it going by the mechanics word. Anything would be appretiated.

Sounds like your T-case has given up the ghost.

Once you get this problem fixed, one bit of advice, unless your on a slippery surface and your tires are allowed to spin a little, NEVER make any sharp turns while in 4WD. It is VERY bad for any vehicle with standard 4WD.

Good luck! :D

Have you checked the fluid level??? It could be dry...

U-joints...

Busted bearings in the T-case....

Could be a lot of things.

If you want to save money and be sure of a diagnosis...bring it to a trans shop...not a general garage....or bring it to the dealership. Both of these places Know exactly whats going on in there...and are going to get you fixed up faster, and replace the parts that are broken.
