Nbs Rear Bumper?

Soooo, saving up over the winter now for a rear rollpan, hidden hitch etc to replace the factory bumper. Based on reading from here, are the rear bumpers for the 900's pretty much tinfoil?? So whether i keep the factory one or change it to just a urethane or aluminum rear rollpan if i get hit do you think there would be much of a difference?

There won't be a damn bit of difference IMO. My wife got rear ended a week and a half ago by some lady who was going 25 or under. Initially they thought the damage was about $1,500 and 2 days worth of work, but they found some buckling up the side of the bed. She hit the driver’s rear side and it twisted the bumper into the bed and I guess it wrinkled it up the bed. I think it’s time to start saving up for some Road Armor bumpers.

There garbage I was backing out of a flat wet yard about 2-3 mph (i Still had my foot on the brake) and I seen the telephone pole coming so I slightly applied the brakes a little harder the front wheels locked up and i slide into the telephone pole which had a piece of 2 inch metal conduit running down it and it put a quarter size dent and about 1/4 inch deep in the middle of the right side of the bumper and pushed it into the bed and took the paint off just a little on the bed. Then I just pulled it back out to its stock location with my hands. So i wouldn't worry about a roll pan even if its fiberglass, I will probably end up getting a roll pan now

The good part is that the right side and left side chrome panels can be replaced separately if one is damaged. I know that doesn't make the bumper any better, but it does help keep the cost down if you only have minor damage to one side.

I hear you...

I know that they design vehicles these days to absorb the impact so that more parts are involved that crumple slowly. Also for weight savings. But I like a truck to have solid beefy bumpers as well as body panels.

I'm pretty satisfied with my 2008 Chevy Silverado with the exception of the body panels and bumper steel thickness. I was washing it the other day and was giving the roof a going over. I pushed the sheetmetal down everytime I moved the sponge, it's really thin now on these new ones.

I know it's galvanized and all and in the old days they rusted far worse. But the sheetmetal and bumpers could have been more truck like.

The bumpers are junk....but I would still get a hidden hitch for the rollpan so you had something to keep a rearend accident from completely going UNDER your truck

Thanks guys, just as i thought. Since im going for certain look, i want to get rid of the ugly stock bumper. I didnt think there would be any difference if i were (heaven forbid lol) to get rear ended if i want with a rollpan. Ill go with the urethane flex rear bumper then and will still have the hidden rollpan since i haul our horses to shows now and then anyhew. :P

ps. nice thin sheet metal on top the roof, ridiculous! :jester:

Kevin... these folks are right. The bumpers (front and rear) are for looks only. They sure as hell won't protect anything if hit.

I agree, you would think GM could make something a little more durable than this.

Kevin,

Your truck is bad ass. I'm not one for many crazy themes or customizing because many times it's over the top but somehow, yours just works. That orange and black is killer. Looked at your pics and I like what you've done to the interior as well. Cool striping. Nice job. I'm not a fan of projectors so that's the only quibble I have but that's just me and not a criticism, you like 'em so go with it.

I can see twin chrome stacks coming through the bottom of the bed behind the cab, just like the Lil Red Express in the late 70's. OK, maybe that would be over the top. :smash:

The rear quarter photo really shows the truck at its best.

Well done.

Thank you :smash: , Sabre a rollpan is a bumper thats flush with the tailgate. High Plains Drifer, sorry no smokestacks will be coming out, down the road ill be putting on a hard top. :lurk::lol: Heres some pics of the rear rollpans, either with exhaust cutouts or not. Haven't decided which one to get yet.
