Changed Rotors/pads Now Excessive Squeal

I have an 06 sierra crew cab z71. I had about 112000 on the odo so I figured I'd change brakes and shocks. I bought delco rotors and napa ceramic pads. I am finding that they squeal a bit while just rolling and it gets really bad when I push the brakes...I thought it was coming from one side so I jacked up the truck and turned each wheel by hand...they both squeak, one side a little higher pitched than the other. I've done a hand full of brake jobs in the past and I did everything the same. I installed all of the clips into the caliper and greased the back of the pad....any ideas..anyone???

When I do a brake job, I use Brakleen on the Rotors and Pads. Especially if they are new, there is a thin film on these parts to keep them from corroding or rusting in storage. Also, I lube the slides on the caliper also, cheap insurance. If you did all of that, I don't know what to tell you, maybe they are just getting broke in, i don't know. I know I did rear brakes on my 02 Silverado I had, that had disk and they squeeled for a while, but then it went away.

I had sprayed brake cleaner on everything when I reinstalled..I don't know..it's still squealing...it sounds a little worse when I'm turning and braking at the same time...I'm also starting to think I have a hub bearing on the way out....I had both of them go at 60K and every once in a while I can hear/feel a slight groan, just the way it started out last time

Disc brakes tend to be noisey. Pad designers have to balance noise, hot friction, cold friction and other factors to make a pad. Noisey pads do not indicate faulty pads. You may well have superior braking because the engineers sacrificed noise for braking power.

 

Hope this helps. Maybe you should turn up the stereo.

I always put a dab (very little) of high temp rtv between the pad and the shim (back) and where it contacts the caliper.

Here is the procedure I always do I can not remember one that had a squeal after I did the brakes:

 

1. High quality pads. Not sure which ones you bought. As all 3 grades of pads have Ceramics in the line up. The range in quality from low to high in this list. TS----X, SS----X, UP----X, AD---- (in 06 the pad number on the front is 7997 and 7653 if hybrid). The NAPA Premium Brakes (which is the last two in the line up) is all I USE, unless it is OE stuff.

2. NEW ROTORS OR TURN ROTORS!!! Never put new pads on old rotors that have not been turned...

3. Flush and Bleed Brakes system.

4. Remove Old parts

5. Replace rotors on hub. If using old rotors make sure hub is clean of all debris on the back and front of the hub of the rotor.

6. Replace caliper brackets.

7. SPRAY thoroughly the entire ROTOR, with Brake Clean. This is important since any oil (even the stuff that is excreted from your skin can cause this issue) on the rotor surface can cause the brakes to squeal, as well as the fluid the new rotors are coated in to prevent them from rusting in the box.

8. Spray calipers with Brake Clean to remove all brake dust and old grease from the slides.

9. Relube the slides on the calipers and brackets.

10. Replace all shims, anti-rattle clips, and pad holding devices.

11. Put pads in caliper.

12. Rewash Rotor with brake clean.

13. Put caliper back on the bracket.

14. Tighten caliper back to spec.

15. Clean hub of wheel (Corrosion here can cause a noise also).

16. Replace wheel and tighten to spec.

17. Do other side same way.

18. Lower vehicle and bed-in. I usually bring the vehicle up to 30 then come completely to a stop, then 45, 55, 65, and then 75 then 50, then 30. Also, gives you a good second to hear if the brake job is quite.

 

I am a NAPA jobber.

 

Every set I have installed for myself or a friend or customer. Quite as a mouse on Sunday......

If there was any sort of material like a coating or oil on the rotor surface, it has since transferred to the pads and that is most likely why you are hearing some squealing.

 

You might try removing the pads and lightly scuffing the surface with some 200 grit wet/dry paper. I would use some hot soapy water to clean the pad surface and re-install the pads.

 

Most ceramic pads don't require any sort of bedding-in but after cleaning and scuffing the pads, go find a straight road with no traffic you can make 4-5 stops from 35-40 to a near stop using medium-hard pedal pressure then repeat by going faster like 55-60 to near 0. Let the brakes cool for 15 minutes without using them.

Another option to try. Do a high speed heavy braking run like 90mph - 20 mph but DO NOT STOP or it will transfer friction material to the rotor unevenly. This will actually take the friction material off the rotor and require a re-bedding as if you just put them on. Might boil off any film on the pads or rotors. Worth a shot before you start taking stuff apart.

the screech should go away as the coating on the pads and rotors is burnt off, i have new pads and rotors and they still squeek and scream..its normal

Cause you are a NAPA jobber and from the looks of the last post, you have a FIRM grasp on how to deal with automotive issues. Cant say the same for the local Oriellys or NAPA place (though the NAPA place seems to get better with time)

Yeah, my family has been doing it since 1948... We have owned a NAPA store since 1971... We currently have 2 stores...

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
