Broken Shock Mount

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've noticed a random bump in my front suspension that's been happening for years and I've looked but I've never found anything that would make it do that and neither could any mechanics when I took it to the dealership for preventative maintenance. I always thought it was just some play in my front light bar. Fast forward to today. I got some new shocks in and I was comparing them to make sure they will fit before I get them installed on Friday. As soon as I checked to make sure they would fit, I notice a difference between the lower shock mounts. I can't believe I've been driving the truck around this long with the front end like this.

On a similar matter, does anyone know where I can get the bolts for that mount by Friday? If I don't have them, I don't think I can get the new shocks installed...

Take that one remaining bolt out of the left hand side. If there is a dealership close see if they have one on stock, if not go to a local hardware store or parts store. All you really need to do is get the right size, try to get a grade 8.8 or 10.9 if they have some.

it would have to be a 2wd, it has coils not torsion bars...the nnbs 1500s have coils regardless of 4x4 or not...but hes got an 01 so its for sure a 2wd...nice truck btw

You can buy bulk grade 8 bolts at Tractor Supply Company if you have one nearby.

Are you the guy with the lifted 2WD?

+1

Most places that carry bolts in bulk will not even charge you if your buying just 1 bolt.

Grade 8 is for SAE bolts which I'm sure it's not, so as said, you'll want a grade 8.8 or 10.9.

I don't know if you'll be lucky enough to find a place to just give you 1 bolt, though it's not out of the realm of possibility.

wow, if you've had that thing at the shop multiple time for a front end noise and that was broke the whole time.... id recommend finding a better shop!

You might want to check if the threads are stripped. My old car's threads rusted so much that when I put new shocks on it, both bolts on one side shot out when I hit a big bump. I ended up having to fish bolts through the top so I could put a nut on the bottom. That was not fun.

To address the title of your post. It appears you lost a bolt and it was too much stress for the remaining ear to handle.

I see no harm in replacing all 4 bolts. That is what I would do in your situation.

I was thinking the same thing. Even the guy changing the oil should have seen that. I find it hard to believe that they even looked for a noise.

Yet another reason why you should find a trusted mechanic and not go off the notion that a dealership knows more about your vehicle and how to service it.

do NOT buy a replacement bolt unless it is grade-8 or better. Don't go to your ACE or Home Depot because they won't have that. Last thing you need is to break off another bolt because it was not the right strength rating.

I would think that the dealer would have something like that and if not what about a local junk yard. Any Silverado or Sierra in your vintage or Tahoe up to 06 should be the right bolt set....

Heck the junk yard might even just give it to yah.....
