well lets see... i dont really know much technical stuff. so ive got a question, i have a 1998 sierra and its all stock. i just bout some 16 inch rims and a set of 285/75/16 tires. my question is, i plan on getting a body lift for it really soon as in as soon as my tax return comes in. how much of a lift will i need for these tires to fit correctly without any rubbing?

any answers or comments are welcome :dunno:

and im tire right now so i messd uppte ile.. a *noob* needs some help

First off, welcome aboard.

Secondly, those tires probably won't rub unless you get them turned in/out and the body is flexing across itself. If/when it rubs, it will be on the black fender skirt under the front bumper. You could just trim that back with a cut off wheel. Get the wheels on first and test from there. That aside, you should go with a 3" inch body lift. Since you are going through the trouble to put one on, why not go as big as possible?

awsome thanks for the help, and when i say i dont know much, i mean i dont know much. what do you mean by getting the tires turned in/out?

285/75/16's wouldn't even clear the steel bumper on my '92 (same body style)...Would have required at least a 3" body lift.

BUT...This can depend on your wheel offset. I was using factory wheels.

thats what i was thinking. and i think your right Wingnut, i dont think they will clear without a lift.

no matter what tho i am going to get a lift for it. anyone have any suggestions on a brand or a place where i can get one for a decent price??

2.5 leveling dude will get ya by. Before i got my lifts all in i installed a 2.5 leveling on and i run those 33s and i have no problem with rubbing or shit. i got stock rims. Right now i got 5.5 inches of lift. go to ebay for a leveling you will save big money. i got a 2.5" pro comp levleing and that came with keyways and lifting blocks.

thanks for all the info guys.

i just put in an order for a 3 inch body lift for 180 since i was going to do it anyway..

untill it gets here and i get it on, would just cranking the torrsion bars give it enough clearence for the tires?

I would twist up the t-bars only if you intend to do this anyway. After twisting those up, you are going to instantly need an alignment. If you have no intentions of raising the front after putting on the body lift, I would hold off on adding the tires.

but some keyways they dont cost much. where did you get you body lift? i got mine from top gun customz for $150. I just didnt like how my truck was lower in the front. so after your lift and it all comes down to opinion i would buy some key ways to push up that front end.

k i didnt crank th T-Bars. i went and had the tire put on and they accually fit! i only had to take the front mud flaps off and they dont rub at all. i got my body lift from Summitracing.com.

Hmmm :rollin:

Be carefull when turning that requires you to flex the body though (like turning into an upward driveway).

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
