Transmission Help

I have a 1999 silverado 4.8L z71 automatic transmission that wont go into reverse, seems to bypass second gear and wont go into 4th either. I toook it to a a transmission shop, only one open and they did a diagnostic on it. The code reader didnt kick anything out. My concern is they are saying it requires a expensive overhaul, could it be something else, like a clogged filter? The linkage looks good. The truck has been sluggish to shift into 2nd for a little while now. Any thoughts, comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Forgot to mention they think the sun gear is stripped out, would this be correct?

broken shell in the tranny.. extremely common in these trucks before about 2004

cause is you have a hardened sun gear that meshes with a shell that is very soft metal,, and the sun gear wins.. you lose reverse and another gear

Thanks, just wanted to make sure they wernt pulling my chain... Been reading alot about it since i Posted and have come to the same conclusion. Supposidy its a problem with theis tranny 4l60e. I think I will buy the "beast" sun shell for them to install on the rebuild.

I had two break in a 2000 V-6 rcsb.. It was rebuilt with an improved reverse shell, and 80K miles it broke again. luckilly the shop worked with me, as they knew after the fact they had some bum shells.. it has a beast now, and it's never given a bit of problems and it's over 200 k miles now..

my truck would get alot of slop and clunks in between shifts before the shell would strip out..
