Exhaust Rattle, Now Engine Light

Recommended Posts

Last night I started to get a rattle in my 04 Silverado. I have 106,000 and have never had a problem with it. Of course, now that itis out of warranty everything is starting to fall apart on it. I climbed under the truck and it appears that the pipe coming out of the back of my cat has come loose.. can this be welded back together and would this cause the engine light to come on? I need to get this fixed at it is my primary vehicle....

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If the break is before your second O2 sensor, then yes it would cause your check engine light to come on due to causing that sensor to register a reading that it outside of it's normal operating parameters. An exhaust shop MIGHT weld it, but if the break is on the cat itself then many shops won't touch it, unless it is to install a new cat.

Thanks,

I will closer inspect it tonight, but I think it is the pipe going into the cat and not the cat itself.. all I know is that it sounds like it is going to fall apart.. and I hate driving a vehicle that makes all kinds of racket, i don't even care for loud pipes.

I will let you know what I find out.... thanks again for the response.

Got home climbed underneath it and had my daughter start it up for me... Low and behold, it would appear that I have either tossed a rod or spun a bearing. Now all I have to do is drop the pan, find out which one it is, see if the piston wall is scored, see if the connecting rod is messed up and look at the crank. I have driven it about 30 miles since it started knocking.. but, the oil pressure remained up, never got hot, just can't imagine what caused this to happen.. all I was doing was driving down the interstate. But, like everything, the warranty went out 6,000 miles ago :D:D

Now all I wish I had was a garage or a shop I could pull it into so I can pull the pan, cause laying outside on the concrete really stinks! Anyone live in Central Alabama that has a space I can borrow for a couple days??
