Westin Nerf Step Bar Creaking

Recommended Posts

FYI - if you have the body mounted Westin nerf step bars installed that mount to the body mount bolts and it creaks when you drive I have the solution. First I called Westin and they sent me new engineered brackets to install but that didn't get rid of the creaks totally. The brackets made the creaks less but didn't totally get rid of the creaking. Since the 3 body mounts are or were independant from each other and with the nerf bars installed they become tied together as one rigid bar. So when the body flexes it still binds causing the creaks. I went to Lowe's and got some large diameter 1/8" thick rubber washers and large steel washers. I put a rubber and steel washer on each side of the bracket where the nerf bar mounts to brackets to allow for some flex where they bolt to the body brackets. I also added some "red" locktite to the bar bolts so they won't come loose and now the creaking is totally gone. Works great. :puke:

Good solution. I hope you know that the red Loktite is pretty strong stuff. It is very hard to remove bolts Liktited with the red Loktite. I ususally use the blue Loktite, which does a good job, but enables the bolts to be removed much more easily with hand tools.

I had an old 1975 Ford LTD which I bought used back in the late 80's and when I needed to change the front brake pads, I found out that the previous owner used red Loktite on the caliper mounting bolts. Let's just say that it took a 5 ft pry bar on top of my breaker bar to get them loose.

That's some good ingenuity right there! I had the Westin 6" oval tube steps on my Silverado and they did the same thing you are describing. I'll keep that in mind with my next truck!

I have the nasta bars. Encountered the same problem because I didn't pay close enough attention to the nasta bracket touching the Body mount. Then I realized the mounts a sound isolation mounts and I created a sound short. I recentered the Bar mounts and ensured there was no metal to metal contact with the brackets. Problem gone. Tighten Bolts to 65 ft lbs.

good to know about the red locktite... when i tightened the bolts to the bar i didnt want to torque the bolts down until they smoked since the tighter you make the bar bolts it would squish the rubber out and kind of defeat the purpose so i tightened the bolts snug. i thot about using the blue but since the bolts were just snug and not smokin "tight" i figured the red would be a better choice. i am hoping i don't have to take the bars off... but just in case i might switch to the blue... alto thank goodness for air tools! :puke:

i think i took my bars on n off several times when it creaked... it drove me nuts. i checked and rechecked to make sure the brackets didnt touch metal. but apparently the body flexes quite a bit. i called westin and they sent me new brackets that were smaller. i installed them but it still made a slight creak... i may just be OCD when it comes to noises. :puke:

I'm the same way about rattles and squeaks. My biggest gripe, though, was that the Westin bars that used the body mounts sat lower in the back than in the front. Looked like crap to me!

Bob,

do you have any pictures of where the rubber and steel washers go? do they go where the tubes mount to the bracket that Westin provided or to where the brackets mount to the body, or both??

what size were the washers (inside diameter and outside diameter)?

thanks,

jerry

    • I ordered the Snap On...waiting for it to come in later this week or early next week.   New front cover, new crank seal and new balancer are on. Water pump, pulley, fan, hoses, and plastics reinstalled. I can move forward knowing all my timing marks are dead on and the front engine is hopefully sealed better than it was. Take 2 with the water pump...trying high temp thread sealer on the lower bolts.   Rebuilt injector and new-new regulator is in, it looks like new. Top intake reassembled and all the bits are reconnected and snugged down.   Thinking about knock sensors again, I located both of mine and, there's your problem, Francis... The driver's side one is broke, plastic is bashed in, part of the wire is bare, and it appears to have been damaged like that for a long time. I saw the wire but didn't think anything of it. The knock sensor might not be my pulled timing issue, but it sure looks suspect. It must still be conducting, otherwise I'd expect a CEL. But perhaps with its sacred crystal inside exposed, jilted and dirty, maybe it's sending mixed signals. So I'm waiting for one of those and a new pigtail to come in. Pass side sensor looks good, except for the spark plug wire resting on it (!). The plug wires are healthy so it shouldn't be causing an issue, but I separated them and added zip ties to nearby looms to keep everything well apart.   So, I'm down to installing a knock sensor AND, oh, replacing the exhaust and cat. I actually think that's going to be fairly easy, it's all bolt-together, all new stuff from Walker is laid out on the shop floor ready to go. Hopefully have this thing on the road again for the weekend.   My luck? It will still be leaking oil, coolant, pulled timing, intermittent CEL for running rich, or it probably won't run at all -- because that's how this project has gone.   I've never worked on a vehicle so ...hurt? ...cursed? in my life. Everything has been effed with SO HARD, but I think...knock on wood...I've managed to undo all the backyard stuff and we're almost reset back to "just" an 80k mile, 30 year old Blazer.
    • Yes. You need to check out that thing, and the hub further.
    • Would this be normal or a worn CV Shaft? 51K miles 3.5" lift? Boots are intact and no visible leaks showing. Attached is a the video I took. Thanks     https://youtu.be/ZnW7PPRmjJY?feature=shared
    • If everything checks out at the MAF, then the MAF is BAD, new or not.   You don't need a signal generator to troubleshoot this. PCM needs ALL powers and ALL grounds able to light a halogen headlight bulb - if it can light the bulb bright, then the wiring is good enough to run the PCM.   Best thing you can do for yourself is spend some time here: scannerdanner.com - Check out all his YouTube videos on similar issues. If you decide to subscribe it's the best bang-for-buck ratio in the automotive world, hands-down. He's got TONS of free vids on YouTube, too.
