Hundreds Of Rust Colored Spots

Recommended Posts

I searched and nothing came up so I'll ask. I've never seen anything like this before. Is anyone finding little rust colored spots on the paint after the winter? I gave the truck the first hand wash of the year today and there are hundreds of little brown rusty spots everywhere. They are even on the 3M clear protective cover at the wheel wells. They are as little as a speck and as big as the bulb on a straight pin. I tried goo gone, wax and window cleaner. I'm thinking it might have been from calcium Chloride used to melt ice this winter. The only thing that would remove them was rubbing compound, now everywhere I rubbed the shine is gone. I'm hoping a good hand wax will solve the problem but really don't know. Any opinions or ideas?

check that thread i have the same prob... it is a common thing for white vehicles. I had em on my last white vehicle but there is way more on my silverado especally for only haveing 3k on it. keep an eye on your bumpers for the chrome rusting. Just noticed spots starting on mine. From what I hear the dealer will take care of the "rail dust" up to a specific mileage. I plan on getting mine in there soon to have the bumpers and paint looked at. There are a few ppl that already got new bumpers and a friend of mine just got new rims on his sierra bc they started runsting. :dunno:

also i used nevr dull on my bumpers and rims. it cleared up pretty much all the rust spots on the chrome and made it very mirror like but lets see how long it takes to come back...

So it's rail dust? I was going to hand wax it last year to prevent this but never did. It wasn't there last fall. I'll read the thread you posted. Thanks.

ya its rail dust. you usually can scratch most it off with your nail but clay bar is what completly gets it off. Ive heard diff mileages such as 7500, 10k and 12k what the dealer will go to, to clean it for free. How do your bumpers look? Mine had spost on the flat part along the grill.

I have a little over 9000 miles on mine. The front bumper has a pit in it which is rusted inside the pit. I assumed a rick chipped it. There are several places where it looks bad. So if the dealer fixes it, will that be the end of it or will it come back again?

to my understanding they will only do the rail dust once (but it will come back). and about the bumpers i heard some dealers were using nevr dull first to see how well it would keep the rust away and other dealers were replacing them right away. Id say have the dealer look and see what you can get em to do. If they do nothing get a clay bar and some nevr dull and polish her up yourself... even tho its way to early in our trucks lives to be dealing with this stuff. i love my truck but cant stand the rust i see on it already even tho i wash it at least once a week and also im just sittin here prayin my lifters dont start actin up like some of the others.

The rust specks are the only gripe I've ever had with the truck. I had an 08 lease just like it and decided to buy instead of lease, so I traded for this one. It's the best vehicle I've ever had. My 08 didn't do this, or I didn't notice, which I doubt as I wash it at least weekly and hand wash weekly when weather permits. I spent about 3 quality hours with my son this afternoon getting the rust spots off but haven't figured out how to get them out from between the letters in SIERRA. I was hoping a good coat of wax would prevent it from coming back.

I've heard some mention the lifters but neither my 08 or 09 5.3 made any noise at all. I went out at 25 below and used the remote to start it while standing right in front to see if there was any lifter noise. It's never made a knock, ping or lifter noise at anytime, but then I use dino Valvoline, Delco filters and change every 3000 miles. I never added a drop of oil between changes and never had any smoke at any time either. I'm very happy with it as it is.

Sorry to hear you resorted to rubbing compound. Always a big mistake to start there. After a wash, clay bar is the right choice. Now that you have dulled the finish, you will need to go to polishing compound to get the luster back.

Polishing compound is basically a much finer grit than rubbing compound. When sanding/buffing/etc., you always start with the coarse material first and work your way up to the finest. There are hundreds of products on the market and everyone has their favorites.

I'd start with the clay bar on the entire truck including the glass, plastic, chrome and the paint. Use lots of lubricant and change out the clay often. I use one bar on the paint and then I save it for later use on the wheels and chrome. Always use a new bar on paint and plastic. After that, carefully polish the spots you rubbed out until the shine is even with the rest of the paint. Last, put a good coat of wax over the entire truck. Don't forget to clean the other surfaces you clay barred with their respective products (glass cleaner, chrome polish, etc)

So I searched Ebay and found some Meguiars G18110 Clear Coat Safe Polishing Compound. I assume this will fix it.

OK, we posted at the same time, thanks for the info.

You definately just need a clay bar and some detailing spray to lubricate the clay bar. You'd be suprised how much smoother the paint will be after using a clay bar. One other suggestion is to divide the clay bar into half and keep using it till it looks really dirty then just throw it away. Also if you happen to drop it on the ground, throw it away immediately.

    • Hi all,   I just bought a 2021 suburban RST with 88,000 miles on it and everything has been good but I’ve been noticing within the last month or so that there are small electrical things going on and I know what the AGM batteries and all the electric electrical in these big trucks you need to have a constant flow with good voltage   That being said, I bought a new battery thinking that that might have something to do with it but today I went to get in and start it and it said no key found when I had the key right in my pocket   It also proceeded to flash the lights inside and outside for over 30 minutes as I went to disconnect the battery as soon as I touch the negative terminal, I heard the relay reset and everything come back up. I got in the truck and started it no problem.   Anyone else have this happen to them? I’m starting to think it’s the KARR system that the dealer installed short circuit stuff.
    • I don't drive this truck on a regular basis since I have a new company truck with no out of pocket fuel or maintenance cost. Yesterday I got it out to run some errands and got the title message on my DCI. A quick Google search suggested to first clean the Map Sensor. I pulled it out and it was sooty so cleaned it up and reinstalled it. Issue not resolved. My OBDII is a couple years old so didn't see any codes. Today I took it to a friend at AutoZone to get him to check it with his reader. It had the following codes: P20C3 P02BB P221F Stating the most likely solution is to replace diesel emission fluid (DEF) tank assembly.   So, I guess a trip to the dealer is necessary. I read where there was a backorder on these tank assemblies several years ago so hope that has been resolved.
    • Are you using a weight distribution hitch system with your trailer as that alone can change the actual tire pressure requirements needed. It would prove interesting to see what the actual individual axle weights are on your truck when you are hooked up to the trailer. In fact when your hooked to the trailer, typically if anything unless it has a large capacity weight distribution system that is over cranked, often the weight on the front axle will be less when hooked up vs driving empty and certainly if one doesn't have a weight distribution hitch. Really the only times one may get up there with weight on the steer axle is if there was a snow plow mounted on the front or a motorcycle on a rack or with a very large jockey tank full of fuel at the front of the box that transfers a bit of its weight to the front axle.    And of course your tires carry more weight for a given tire pressure due to their size vs a stock sized tire so there is that to take into the equation as well.
    • Great info here thank you. I just joined, we have a 2014 Silverado truck we bought about 4 years ago with less than 5,000 miles on it. It has approximately 24,000 on it now. It appears to have all the standard issues that people are talking about. Occasional charging problems especially using 110 volt, occasional blinking triangle where nothing will turn on when first starting the truck but it will reset itself if you wait 10 to 15 minutes. Noisy coupler between the flywheel and the generator. Our truck is speed limited to 74 mph, is there any way to change that? The latest issue we have been dealing with is when driving long distance on the highway at full speed the generator does not keep the batteries charged. The meter will go into the yellow/red border Zone for charge status and the yellow triangle will illuminate solid but the generator will not keep the battery charged, not sure why the controller doesn't tell the gas engine to increase RPM to increase generator output it usually stays well below 25 kilowatts even though the battery is discharging and I have to slow down the highway to 45 mph and eventually pull over and let the truck idle to charge the battery so I can continue driving at speed. Has anyone had this issue before or have any idea how to diagnosed it? When via Motors was around it they were very helpful at troubleshooting. This becomes much if the Terrain is hilly and you're towing a small trailer
    • I have the GMC accessory (REV) cover installed by dealer. Ordered with the truck.  They did a very good install job, can't find a single issue. Some water gets in around the tailgate but no where else.  You can see daylight around the tailgate but that's not the covers fault.  Installation is means everything. Guys at my dealer were seasoned pros, not inexperienced here today good tomorrow types, like many dealers employ for these jobs.   I don't mind paying for a professional job.
