Bug And Tar Remover

I couldn't find an appropriate forum, so I thought I'd post this here. I've gotten some great tips about different auto-body suggestions, so hopefully this is the right forum.

 

I have some excessive build-up of road tar and bugs underneath my doors and panels.

 

What bug and tar remover does anyone recommend to remove these problems spots that are not easily removed with mild soap and water?

 

Just curious if there were any tricks of the trade.

 

The weather is starting to turn around here, and I'm anxious to get out there and clean and wax up the truck.

WD-40 has worked great for me in the past.

Clay bar works well. other than that whatever the auto parts store has will work....I like claybar cause it doesn't use harsh chemicals that could dull your clearcoat.

Can you use clay bar on a surface that is not completely clean?

Interesting. Do you just spray it on a cloth and wipe off the tar, or do you dilute it and then apply?

 

This will do nothing to the paint or clear coat?

I just spray it on a rag, clean the spot, then wipe the area clean with a spray bottle detailer, and clean cloth. I am sure you can just also wash the area off with regular car soap when you are done. I would not recommend leaving the WD-40 on the paint directly for hours. I have done this many times on the front of my hood, and have not seen any "dulling" of the area. I also make sure I have a good amount of wax on that same area, every time I wash and wax the truck. But I only wax my truck maybe twice a year.

WD-40 followed by a degreaser (e.g., mean green) works great. Tar removers are just petro solvents... as is WD-40. It kills wasps too in a pinch!

Don't use degreaser on paint. You could etch it or cause other permanent damage that way!

Really?... didn't know that. I've been spot cleaning with it for years without an issue (I wash it off with soap/water afterwards). I guess just soap and water to remove the oily residue then...
