Muffler, How Long?

looking for a muffler swap, NO CATBACK systems. had a flowmaster 40 series and i liked it alot. but im looking for a quieter one this time and gona try out magnaflow. im looking for just a muffler swap and would like to know what size of the case i need to buy. on magnaflows website, the cat-back system comes with a 22" long muffler so im guessing that would be the one? called a muffler shop near by and they told me they would put a 18" one. im going for the 3"in/3"out single muffler but dont know what you guys are putting on your trucks.

airaid jr intake kits worth the money? i hear complains on the new trucks with a full cai systems, and odnt like my filter exposed all the way.

Magnaflow is a quality straight-through design and sounds great, but if you want to avoid any possibility of drone (assuming that is something you are also trying to quiet down), look at Corsa, which like Magnaflow you can buy a la carte (without catback piping)

Also look at the Flowmaster Super 50 p/n 530552.

It's a 3 chamber design vs. the 40 series which is a 2 camber design.

I just put on the FM 50 on my Avalanche and love it.

i do not want to spend over 100 on a muffler itself. but my main question, how big does the muffler case have to be?

i got an 18" magnaflow with 3/3 and i think it sounds great. very happy with it.

It should be 3in exhaust pipe. You are not likely to find a muffler the exact length of your factory muffler, but that's no big deal. Just weld in a piece of pipe to add length.

the longer the muffler, the quieter it will get.

 

I've had a Corsa Touring on my old truck, very mellow at idle and cruising but aggressive under hard acceleration.

To duplicate that sound without dropping quite that much cash on the new truck I'm thinking the 22" long 3" Magnaflow is what will do the job.

If you like it more aggressive over all go with something smaller.

 

Personally, I would stay far away from "Flowmaster", the chambered design is not conducive for optimal performance, all it accomplishes is achieving a redneck sound on your nice new truck.

Airaid Jr is definitely worth the money, but don't pay $149 off the website. Got mine off of Amazon for $98 shipped. Made my 40 series Flowmaster sound even meaner...getting better mileage and performance with it coupled with the K&N drop in filter. Even at $98 bucks, I feel like I am in the wrong business, plastic tube, 2 adapters, 4 hose clamps and a breather tube...but seriously, after driving with it installed for two months I am VERY happy.

yea, most likely im gona go with a muffler thats 18"+ since thats what they offer in a magnaflow cat-back system for a single in/out. ive read good thing about jr intakes, BUT they do not have em ready for 09+ trucks becuase of the relocation of the maf i believe. but i would DEF consider buying the tube instead of spending close to 400 for a whole thing.

krobo, any reason you got one with an offset? or does center/center does not fit?

I have a 5x8 oval case by 18" long, you know it's there, it has a nice purr to it, although I would like it to be a little louder, and I think a shorter case would have done the trick, but it's not worth changing now, but I have been thinking about getting some maggie hi-flow cats.

At the top right hand corner there is a tab that says "options". Click it and click standard display mode.

I muffler swapped for a Magnaflow 12589 (5"x11"x22") and then dumped single exhaust in front of axle.

 

Good deep sound and slightly louder than stock.. zero drone. Can find it $100 online.

 

 

If I had to do it again, I'd def buy a Magnaflow but get a little smaller size so it would be louder.
