Yup, those are your options.

It the metal is exposed, you should cover the metal with a primer paint first, and then with the body color paint.

My effin barn cat I put 3 claw marks when apparently scrambling down the bed rail while losing control

The scratches on mine appear to be just in the clear coat as they look white-ish on a black truck....

Would y'all be thinking just clear coat on this one? ie is clear likely to un-whiten them? It is black granite/carbon black.

TIA

You should be able to just buff them out, perhaps some wetsanding first..

To the original poster...if it's right down to the metal it will start to rust if you don't get it repaired. The proper way would be to repaint the whole panel. If you got the cash, and are that concerned, thats the route to go.

I've had great success with using touchup paint to "fill" the scratch, leveling it off, and then wetsanding and polishing such scratches. There is also a product out there that is designed for this, the name is langka??? or something to that effect.

The main point is that if it really is down to bare metal, it will start to rust, which will then spread underneath the good paint and eventually turn your truck to dust!!! well maybe a little overdramatic, but you ge the point.
