Brake Noise When Stopping - Not A Squeal

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My truck makes a brake noise every time I stop - getting very annoying. It is not the squeal of a wear indicator hitting the rotors. It only happens at the very end of the stop, when I'm going very slow and inching to a halt. Like I said, the noise isn't a squeal - it sounds more like the hum or tone you get when you run your finger around the top of a crystal champagne glass.

The rotors look okay...no major grooves in them. They are pretty shiny - I might even describe them as having a shiny glaze on them.

Other than the noise, the truck stops great.

Anyone else have a similar problem? Suggestions? Is it time for new rotors and pads, or am I going to get the same phenomenon?

Thanks,

-Steve

I had the same issue at about 30K. The caliper needed to be re greased, problem gone. All the brake dust was causing it, give it a good cleaning maybe with the wheel off and a pressure washer, could be something is just stuck in their.

is it coming from the front or back? Mine was coming from the rear. Same noise you are describing. took the drums off and blew all the dust out and hit the lip of the drum with some sand paper. fixed it up.

I am having the problem too, exactly as described. Where on the caliper would I need to grease, and with what grease? Will any regular wheel bearing grease work? I will try to shoot it with some air or water and clean it out and see if that helps too.

Mine was on the front but the above fix for the rear is also good. The local auto store should have brake caliper grease. It is a clear silicon type that goes on the slide pins. Like the rear you could knock off the lip of rust if any around the rotor also. Bet it is just dirty. Many people never pay good attention to this area. When you rotate tires you should give the brakes a good wash down, keeps them nice and quite.

Yeah +1 on the regrease.

Its the movement of the pads against the piston and the movement on the slider pins that cause squeaking....

You pull the pad out clean it with brake clean and put a little of the silicone lube on the back of the pad where the piston contacts it...clean and relube the sliders too
