Broken Accessory Bracket

My alt and power steering bracket broke while I was rolling down I5. I think I drove around 5 miles with no water pump before I realized there was a problem and pulled off the road to shut down the truck. Chewed my belt into oblivion, broke the bracket in half, atomized the coolant, and drove the temp gauge up to 240ish range. To top it off I was pulling a 1500lb trailer.

 

 

I have a few questions

 

Why would this bracket break, is it really under that much stress?

 

The bigger question, at what temp do I roast the engine? The truck restarted fine once cool, but I fear I may have prematurely worn something out. What should I keep an eye out for?

 

 

I hope I didn't nuke the head gaskets.
