New Sierra, Hood Paint Issues

Recommended Posts

Posted

My week-old Sierra has a paint issue. There seems to be a faded-looking streak going down the middle. Hopefully the photos will show up. I plan to take the truck to the dealer very soon but am a bit worried they will have "selective vision." I can see it in all lighting, but it is more apparent in some situations than others.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

Its not just condensation (I see the water) in that spot following the contour in the hood, is it? PM me your VIN #, Ill try to pull a few things to see if anything stands out.

Unfortunately, it isn't condensation. I actually wiped the center of the hood off before the photo to move the water bubbles. I noticed this streak for a couple of days ago. It was cloudy outside tonight (after the rain), and the spot shows up best for a photo when it's a little dark.

It isn't as obvious as the photo makes it look, hence my anxiety about cooperation from the dealer.

You can do one thing before you take it in. Get some scratch remover liquid wax, and try to polish out that spot. If it is just some clearcoat haze on the surface, it will come out. If it is in the base paint coat beneath the clearcoat, you will accomplish nothing. It is worth a try at least in my opinion. Scratch remover wax is very finish friendly, and it will not leave any marks in the clearcoat, like rubbing compound, for example, will.

Wash it and wax it.... If it is still there.... Take it back.....

Take some pictures out in the sun.... after you wash and wax it... Looks to me like they will have no problem seeing it. But getting them to fix it can sometimes be an issue.

Wax isn't going to do that any good. If anything is going to remove it, it's going to be a suitable polish or compound.

Honestly what it looks like to me is that the dealer's PDI folks may have burned it with a rotary buffer. It may be able to be polished out, but I would suggest getting the dealer to reimburse you for taking it to a professional detailer in your area to do the job instead of having their hacks take another crack at it.

If the damage is too severe for a detailer to take care of (a good one should be able to tell fairly easily) it may need to be refinished.

Let me know where you live and I can try to recommend someone to you; as a professional detailer myself I have a number of connections across the country and might know who to send you to.
