Transmission And T-case Issues

2003 Sierra

I have a 2003 Sierra 1500 w/Auto 4wd.

It also has 155,000 miles and I think it had a slide in camper on it at some point because the roof has scuff marks and it has airbags in the rear.

My 1st problem is with my transmission. When the trans shifts from 1st to 2nd, it feels like a double shift. Meaning the RPMs will drop, then after a couple seconds the truck will have a "harsh engagement" and lurch forward. It is hard to explain in words.

My thought is the 2-4 band is worn and has to travel further to properly engage. But I don't see why the RPMs drop before the band is fully applied. It also doesn't always do this when the truck is first started in the morning and cold. And sometimes if I am into the throttle a bit, it won't shift like I am describing. It seems like it is functioning properly.

I figured I could relearn the transmission shifts adapts so it could then tell when 2nd gear was engaged and maybe it would help a bit. I cannot afford a SERTA or rebuild at this time.

My 2nd problem is with the transfer case. When I bought the truck I noticed a clunking at times when bliping the throttle or taking off from a stop. It sounded like a tranny mount. I went to replace the mount and found it was fine. I replaced it anyway. I grabbed the rear driveshaft at the t-case output and moved it up and down and I could hear and feel a clicking from inside the t-case.

Seems like maybe there is a bearing that is starting to go. I haven't pulled the driveshaft to see if the rear end has any play but I plan to when I get some time. I also want to do a tranny service.

Sorry for the novel.

Thanks for looking.
