Flowmaster Delta 40

I'm looking for a muffler for my '04 5.3 silverado to replace the stock. Mainly what I'm hoping for is improved HP and gas mileage, and a little better tone. Nothing loud or annoying but something that certainly has a tone to it. I know there would be better out there, but cost is also an issue. Anybody have a review for the Flowmaster 40? Or recommend a better one.

I think your HP and gas mileage will not hardly change, especially if you just swap in the muffler with stock tubing. The flowmaster is decent, but it is pretty loud, and is aluminized steel, so if you have snow, or other rust issues, they can rust out fairly quick. I would reccomend going over to youtube, and listening to lots of clips, this will give you a better idea of exactly what you want

I have the flowmaster 40 series, dual setup on my pickup. There's a picture of them in my garage, they were fairly cheap. They're some out there that flow better, but your catalytic converter is your main restriction so it doesn't matter. IMO, the 40 series is the closest thing to a straight pipe sounding muffler that I've ever heard. It does have a little bit of a tamed tone at low RPMs, then comes alive at high RPMs. If you liked a natural truck engine tone(that sounds like you have a cam in it) then this muffler will be great for you. If you like that deep tone, like what mustangs have then go with something like borla or magnaflow. :)

I second what 2001Silverado364 said, I have a dual setup on my truck as well. If your looking for a big HP and mileage increase, then switching mufflers isn't gonna do much of anything. As for the rust issues my '87 has Flowmasters on it and has been in Alabama(no snow and salt on roads) and they don't have any rust at all, and they have been on there for over 4 years. On the other hand my '06 which is has been with me up in Kansas(snow and salt on roads), they are heavily rusted and haven't even been on a year. So your experience will very with that depending on where you live.

Flowmaster 40series... not for you if you want it quiet.

Mine had like a magna flow 50 or something, 1 into 2. Was nice and mellow while cruising, and WOT was still a decent sound.

Go with the Flowmaster 40 Series muffler if you want your truck to be loud. I love the sound of a 40 Series Flowmaster Muffler, I need some long tube headers next.

You should consider the Flowmaster 50 series big block muffler. better sound and no drone! You won't see any mileage or HP change though.

hmm, I'm a little confused on what I should do. I would really like to see a little upgrade in mileage and hp and of course sound...maybe I should bite the bullet and have a true dual straight pipe system put on. I just want something new and exciting where I can tell a little difference. What is the best thing to do with the cat for a good upgrade and improvement. I really don't want to have it taken off cause it gets too loud. How cheaply do you guys think I could get a good sounding dual pipe system? It looks like Heartthrob is about the cheapest thing out there, but I don't know about that. I'd rather go with flowmaster. Seems like a good middle road quality.

You will not see any improvement at all with true duals and no mufflers, if that is what you are getting at by straight pipes. :) You will likely have a loss power and mpg unless tuned for the new exhaust. The only way to see HP and MPG gains, will be minimal, is with a full tuned system designed for the truck.

I know it is hard because money burns holes in my pockets too but save your money and get a nice performance system. I thnk that is what you are looking for. CORSA sounds mean as hell from what I have heard.

Yeah the straight pipes won't net you anymore performance and cutting off your cats entirely hurts performance on newer vehicles. If you want something that sounds good with some improved performance, I would suggest getting yourself a set of headers.

The cats are high flow to begin with so leave them on for sure. Best bet is a true dual exhaust from the cats out. If you are really wanting extra mileage and performance, get a tune instead....about the same cost as two mufflers would be. Should save you a couple of hundred dollars. I am getting a Blackbear tune next month.

okay...can ya'll tell me more about the tune. What all is in involved and how much does it generally run?

$250. Don't know exactly what he does but I assume it involves a laptop and a lot of knowledge....I hear great things about his abilities. Way more bang for the buck than a muffler/exhaust mod.
