Do I Need A Scanner?

I've got a stock, 2005 Tahoe, 5.3l that the check engine light came on the other day.

 

Do these trucks require a scanner in order to get the codes or is there some way to have them read out on the intstrument cluster or somewhere else?

 

The only place around me that will scan them without dropping the truck off, is Auto Zone, but they are a ways away.

 

The truck is actually running better and getting better gas mileage since the light came on. :-)
