Got Rear-ended

Well, I was picking up my brother's lawnmower a few hours ago and I got hit by a minivan less than 10 minutes after I left. Repairs and insurance stuff is pretty explanatory, but I'm worried about what happened when I got hit. I hit the gas to go pull off the road and the engine revved, but the truck didn't move. Turns out the transmission was in neutral. Is that an indication of damage, or does the transmission automatically shift into neutral to prevent damage during a collision?

Oh, and here's a few pics. It was a pretty low speed hit, so there isn't too much damage and the lawnmower is fine.

I was rear ended recently by a drunk. New bumper and hitch was all that was needed. Never had any trouble with the tranny.

Jolt probably just caused the shifter on the trans to pop out of gear. Does it shift properly now? By all means mention it to the adjuster

I was rear ended by a mustang, and it just crumpled the front on it up to the tune of $7000. It scratched the plastic on my rear bumper, but I've never heard of a tranny problem after being hit in the rear.

Agreed.

It shifts fine and I didn't feel any issues with the transmission afterward. But if the other insurance company will cover it, I'm going to have it checked out anyway.

I think you'd have to be hit pretty damn hard to cause Tranny problems. I think it's more like what Txab said. The jolt just kind of popped it out of gear. But if you think there is something wrong with it, get them to look at it since you can claim it as damage from the accident.

+2. The van would have replaced the box and drove the drive shaft into tranny. Looks like about 1500 bucks parts and labour. For peace of mind have em check it out. Cheers
