High Ratio Rockers

Altho I'm planning on some mods this winter, I'm thinking of installing some "high" ratio rockers: 1.6 vs stock 1.5. Anyone know what kind of gains I can expect. I realize it's not like putting in a higher lift cam, but I figure that's almost 10% increased lift. Appreciate any comments.

Like you said, it'll be like there is a more lift and you'll get more air flow. A little more power, also. But, it won"t be like a cam in the aspect that it doesn't have more duration and won't provide that "thump dump" that most cams deliver. I'd put a cam in it before I put high ratio rockers in it. But, as long as you know how to adjust valves, it's no problem to do.

Thanx - yea, cam, heads and intake will go in this winter, but was looking for just a little something for now. Lifters are cheap and easy to put in, and was hoping for maybe 10 hp??? What think ye?

I was thinking somewhere along the lines of 15hp, in a 5.7, that is. Since you have a 97 z71, I assume that's what motor it's got. A little less on the 5.0l though, maybe 12hp.

just some thoughts and possible concerns

1.6 rockers will produce more side loads on the valve stem & valve guides unless rockers are roller tip

i don't think its a problem but,

possible valve spring coil bind

interferance between valve seal and valve spring retainer

the first one is of concern knowing your truck is a '97 with 100 thou plus miles on it

i have been thinking about this same mod

please let us know about the results

Thanx - I was thinking the same thing - that's 10% more side loading. Not sure how to "measure" how much more wear, but... I'm still planning on going with an Edelbrock performance kit this winter, which will replace the heads - I'll check out the old valve train then, so see if the side loading was a n issue. I've known of a lot of guys using higher ratio rockers on motorcycles, but they don't get the miles put on them like I would my truck.

I'll post something this winter when I pull the heads.

Thanx again.
