Your symptoms point towards a bad IPC. These Instrument panel clusters had a problem. 04 was one of the years. Usually several of the stepper motors went crazy. When mine went it was the speedo and the oil that went whacky. There was a TSB for this problem. If your over 70k miles then you'll be paying for the repair.

 

2 ways to go. Have your Instrument cluster repaired or buy a rebuilt cluster. They are plug and play. Only the mileage needs to be programmed on the replacement cluster. Ebay is a good place to find cluster re-builders. Or you can replace the individual stepper motors yourself. Motors are found on Ebay. You need to be good at soldering though

I replaced all of the stepper motors in my cluster and it was not hard at all. Make sure you have a solder sucker and you can buy them at Radio Shack. I replaced all mine for about $45 including shipping and I bought them from ebay. I should have replaced all the light blubs in the cluster. One went out a week later. You can search youtube and there are some videos that will show you how to get the cluster out......Scott
