AC problem in First Gen S-10

Hey guys. I have a 91 S-10 with AC. In the last 3 weeks I've developed a problem with the AC. The air has started to come out the heater and defrost vents instead of the proper vents. I have figured out that it is most likely a vaccum problem. But thats about it. Has anyone ever worked on a problem like this in a first gen and fixed it? If so can I be given some tips on where to start looking to find the vaccum leak? BTW I can also hear the little flap that redirects the air rattle every now and then like its gettin opened and closed real fast several times.  The air comes out the proper vents in the morning or evening when the truck has been left off for a long time. TIA for any help anyone can give.

i'd like to know some answers as well.  my a/c blows through my vents and floor (mainly through my floor tho) and my feet get freezing while my face and upper half stay hot :flag:

 

i heard the vacuum switches go bad easy in the old chevy/gmc trucks and is easy to fix.

 

so i'd like some help to if noone minds

If it works when everything is cool then the vacuum leak is probably small and when everything contracts the leak is sealed or at least sealed enough to allow proper functioning of the controls.

 

I have a 93 and there is a hose that leads through the firewall to the interior.  It's located almost in the center of the firewall close to the distributor and a little above it.  Track it back and make sure it's not cracked.  Replace it if you find any cracks at all.

 

If no cracks are visible then the problem in in the interior and that's a major pita.  Try removing the radio to gain access to the vacuum line to inspect for cracks.  If the line checks out then it's probaly the control unit.  Not cheap.  Try here if you decide to buy a new unit.  LMC Truck

Whoops forgot to mention guys, about 4 days after posting this I found the leak. Evidently the hose got a hole put in it by something, and oddly enough it would sometimes seal :shrug: It works now. But hey who care Im getting a new truck on the 27th lol

 

The line btw was under the hood that led to "pot" thats in the engine compartment.

2003 Chevy S-10 Xtreme, stepside with the extended cab, 4.3 vortec and the 5 speed stick (i dislike autos lol) beige interior, and black exterior. Its about time too. Been waiting on it for what seems like forever :cheers:

I've had the same basic problem that load is describing.  The majority of my cold air blows at the floor.  And in the summer if I don't run the AC it will let some hot air come thru even when everything is off.

 

Years ago my mechanic mentioned something was wrong, but I can't remember exactly.  Something with the air ducts not closing correctly.

 

But hey, as long as it gets cold when I need it and warm when I need it, I'll survive.  :cheers:

I had a problem like this on my 91 S-10.  In my case, there is a vaccum line near the firewall, just above the intake manifold.  (Take off the air cleaner and look from the passenger side.)  It would come loose and then the air routing would fail and air would come out all vents.  After it had come loose for the third time, I had to put some sticky glue on the tube to keep it from happening again.

Hey I know which vacuum hose you are referring to.  I just fixed a bad leak back there.  I'm gonna have to see if it helped anything.  Where does the other end of that vacuum hose connect to?  I though maybe it ran down to the transfer case(mine is 4WD)???

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
