P0449 Update, Think I Fixed It!

SO I had the p0449 or p0455 code for a while and I did lots of research on this site and finally decided to buy the ac delco part 214-2149 at advance auto for 23 bucs. It was very easy to remove the old one and very easy overalll to do the entire job. I couldn't get the hard plastic shrink tube off of the old purge solenoid so I bought a hose from autozone with a bend in it and cut it to size. I cut off the quik disconnect from the hard plastic tube as well as from the solenoid. I used two hose clamps, one end on the purge solenoid and the other end to the little white plastic quick connect, and installed the new purge solenoid and it fit like a glove. My check engine light has not come back on in almost 100 miles driving and about 25 starts. Im hoping I resolved the problem, keeping my fingers crossed!! And I only spent about 30 bucs and took about 10 minutes to change. Cant believe the stealership charges $350 for that!!

most people are more talented that they think. doing your own repairs can save you lots of bucks and you feel better about it. now you have some extra cash for some mods

Did you relocate the vent at the end? (Black box thingy)

 

I've heard that adding more fuel after the first click (when the tank is now full) can cause this to fail after time, saturating it with fuel? Im not positive on this but a few guys at work told me that. Also when I brought mine to the dealer for this same problem (under warrenty or I'd do it myself) he turned me away and told me to come back with my original gas cap (I had a locking one I bought from them!) he says that over time the locking gas cap lets air in and out of the tank making it an open system? Causing the solenoid to actuate more than it needs too? Maybe he was full of it.

You do have some correct information. Overfilling the fuel tank causes gas to get to the vent soleonoid. Because this is a very sensative piece of electronics, a small amount of gas will short the solenoid enough to cause it to send an incorrect voltage reading to the PCM thus throwing the P0449 code. The code simply means the PCM is not seeing the correct current from the solenoid. Doesn't mean it is working or not working. It could still be working with the 0449 code, but with incorrect voltage, and probably not for long. Computers arent that smart. They only know what the correct voltage needs to be to work properly, and any variance makes it think something is wrong. When the solenoid completly does malfunction, there will be a loss of vaccum in the system, which will trigger more code. P0445 I think. Usually a replacement solenoid is the only fix for either the 0449 or the 0449 and 0445 together. 0445 code on its own without 0449 could be just gas cap issues(remember vaccum loss)just as a completly failing solenoid which should throw both codes 0445 and 0449 if the overfilling caused it to completly fail(not open and close properly) The fix that Mikebec posted it the fasted cheapest way to easily cure the problem. And it fixes the problem with the exact part that origionally came on the truck. If that part, which GM claims has been recalled fails again 2 years later, yoopty doo, your out another 30 bucks.....Surely better than the 300 dollar fix GM wants to do at the dealer.........I fixed my 2006 silverado crew the same way.
