Can't Get Dizzy Out Of Engine.

Need some help, I have an 85 GMC Sierra and it doesn't have any spark, I changed the cap, and rotor, had the coil, and module tested and they tested good. BTW just changed plugs and wires this winter. My next step is to take the entire dizzy out and test the pickup coil. I have taken the hold down bolt and clamp off marked the dizzyand the engine to put it back, but it will not come out of the engine. I have never taken one out before so not sure what to expect. Any ideas anyone?

It just pulls straight up. Has it raised some and feel like its caught or is it still stuck to the block? It will come out

maybe a small pry bar do not use excessive pressure turn engine over until the rotor is pointing at the fire wall and mark the postion on some tape same for the vacuum canister on the valve cover this will make for easy installation

It looks like it is raised up a little and is stuck. I used all the strength i could muster and it wouldn't come up

missed that no reason for it to not lift out? maybe try turning the rotor while lifting?

yea that is what I thought. I did turn, well i say I turned it i turned the outer part, not the part where the cap goes. This engine has been in a really long time it seems and a lot of grease on it so I did put some penetrating oil on it tnight to see if that helps in the morning.

i build the muncie four speed trans as a smalsl buissness i had one come in years ago it still had the original oil from the early sixties the gear would not slide of the maishaft due to the black stuff stuck on the side of the shaft is the oil in this engine really black like it has not been changed in the last 20 years near the bottom of the dizzy there is an oil gallery this part of the dizzy is a snug for to keep oil pressure up maybe be stuck there

The inner shaft that the rotor mounts to will need to turn as you pull up on the outer housing. The gears on the cam and distributor mesh together in there. If you were able to pull up the outer housing slightly, it sounds like it is free of interference. Keep working on it, it will come out.

No the oil isn't old I change it regularly, but i don't know how often it was changed before i got it. It was used on a farm so not sure. but getting ready to try and see what i can do with it. I will update you all when i get done. Thanks for all the help.

Ok all after a little persuasion with a pair of Channel Locks I got the dizzy out. Something that concerns me though is that a lot of the parts were damaged, Like the metal piece was broken off of the cap, the pickup coil the magnet was in half and some of the plastic washers where the springs are right under the cap were broken. Not sure what caused all this to go on, but I got it all apart and am going to clean and replace needed parts and see what happens.

if there is any sideways movment in the shaft, top or bottom. i would replace the entire dizzy(distributor up here) if you marked placement of shaft should be an easy exchange Rob
