L96 = 360 hp at 5400 rpm

LY6 = 322 hp at 4400 rpm

same size motor so why the discrepancy and why is the LY6 standard on the most heavy duty rigs?

HP numbers are for the advertisments. Torque numbers are what counts. Perhaps the LY6 has a higher torque number at a more usable lower RPM than the L96? Having a torque peak at 4800rpm is not really worthwhile unless you plan on working the engine at that rpm.

Because it has variable valve timing. It is also flex fuel capable. That is the difference. I will attach Chevy's press release.

They are basically the same engine. The LY6 varies in HP numbers depending on the vehicle. For 2009 the LY6 is rated at 364 hp in the HD pickups unless the truck was ordered as a cab chassis then the HP numbers were reduced to around 322. Samething with the L96 in 2010. The other difference is the L96 is capable of running E85, but the HD trucks isn't setup up for it. Only the Chevy Express and GMC Savana are able to run E85 starting in 2010 with the L96. Both engines have VVT. Also in the vans, the HP numbers are reduced down to around 322 hp for both engines.

GM ran the LY6 engine from 2007.5 to 2009, starting in 2010 it has been replaced with the L96. I wouldn't be surprised it has something to do with the goverment standards on fuel mileage on all vehicles having to increase.

Awesome, I needed this information. Do you happen to have the document regarding the "updated 6L90E" for 2011? I read somewhere that the 6sp trans was beefed up for 2011, getting ready for higher HP in 2012...
