Almost That Time Again...cold Weather!

Never had a carb'ed engine in the winter time but from what i've read it can be a real PITA! Im in the south east so temps range anywhere from high teens as lows to high 30's-mid 40's as highs!

What are some tips that will help at least with cold starting and keeping it running?

Major pumpage!!!!!!!!!!!!! The correct procedure would be to pump a little crank for a few seconds pump a good bit then start it while pumping at the same time. Then just hold your foot on the gas awhile for it to warm up a little.

If this vehicle is new to you and you don't know the history, consider having a thorough cleaning and a kit put in the carb. The have it properly adjusted. On my carb'd engine, 3 pumps, then crank. It'll catch and run just fine with no further holding the accelerator. Works just fine all year long

Depends on what type of choke mechanism you have as well. On my two, it usually involves a short crank session to fill the fuel bowls, close the choke and one squirt of juice. Usually starts up and then I modderate the motor with the choke until warm.

a good working choke is very important to getting started in the cold. carburetors at one time was all that was available and they worked almost all the time without problems
