A Couple Of Technical Question

Recommended Posts

Got two technical questions:

1) what is the best place to drill 2 3/8" holes in the frame in the engine compartment for the GMT 800?

2) what is the frame thickness of the GMT800 in the engine compartment?

Short Summary:

I am doing the Big Three Upgrade and I want to drill new ground holes for fresh grounding points but do not want to impact the integrity of the frame too much and do not want to buy too long of a bolt for securing the new ground wires.

Yes, I have looked through my technical documents but cannot find anything that helps me with my questions. Thanks guys.

Why do you need a bolt for grounding of wires? You should only need to drill a small hole near the center of the C channel (neutral stress area) and use a self tapping small diameter sheet metal screw for the grounding screw. That is the way it is usually done.

I believe there are holes already here on both sides...I taped these holes and just screwed the bolts in...I have the cab and bed grounded as well.

I wasnt sure. I was approaching it the same way that I did when I installed my hitch out back...bolts tightened down in preexisting holes. Thanks for the suggestion....

The only place the up-fitters manual forbids holes drilled is the part where the frame goes from narrow to wide part behind the front wheels. This is a critical area and any holes will reduce the integrity of the frame. Single small 1/4 - 3/8 holes else-wear are usually not a problem.
