It all depends on what is inside.  For games you want the following:

Good 800+ mhz pentium III or IV or athalon processor

At least 128 megs of ram

Good Graphics accelerator card (with built in ram atleast 16 megs)

Other things matter too but these three are keys to a good running gaming computer.

for a gaming machine your better off building it.

if you have money look at a nice P3, large amount of fast ram. Geforce 3 (or 2 ultra) large fast harddrives, maybe a hardware raid setup. 43 plasma display.

ok i guess i started to get into a system i want. nevermind.

I have found that true blue IBMs are hard to updgrade. I would look for something that is more upgradable.  I prefer Dell because I can pretty much build it excatly the way I want it right on the web page and it is very upgradable, but gateway and Micron are both very upgradable. I would also stay away from Compaq. Anything that has onboard video and such is usaully much more expensive and a pain in the rear to upgrade. Otherwise what everybody else has said seems pretty right on.

Oh yeah, HP computers also have all of that on-board stuff that makes it almost impossible to upgrade.  Stay away from them too. SummitXMK is on track with all of those computer though and Dells tech support is great.  They will send out any part that you say is broken right away.
