Engine Serial Number Location?

Hi,

 

Can anyone tell me where the Vin number or serial number is located on a 5.7 liter from a 1998 Cheyenne C3500? Manual says VIN derivative location is on front right block under cylinder head but can not locate it there.

 

Also, any ideas how or where I can then find out what was the VIN of the car that the engine was originally installed into?

right side, passenger side, curb side under the alternator

It's pretty hard to see on an installed engine with all of the accessories.

Have now removed belt, alternator, belt tensioner, alternator bracketry to expose the the front, right hand (passenger) side of the block but still can't locate the engine serial number. Any other places I could try looking?

 

Under the AC compressor or brackets?

 

Its an ex military truck also. Not sure if this makes any difference?
