2010 Silverado, Transmisson Slipping

2010 silverado 2500

6.0L

6 speed auto

1200 miles

 

when i first pull out of the driveway in the A.M. (after the engine has reached 210) the tranny slips just for a second when shifting from 3rd to 4th. it only does it when the truck has sat overnight. after that initial slip, it will shift just fine all day long.

What you are experiencing is most likely a shift "flare" where the rpms rise say 200-300 rpm betweem the shifts and there is a delay between 3-4

 

These 6l90E transmissions have been gaining a reputation for this issue. The most common is the 2-3 shift flare (which btw my truck has been experiecing for snice I bought it april '09). But I have also heard of and experienced this conidtion on thr 3-4 shift.

 

There is a TSB out for this shift flare issue, which the ypsilant transmission plant (where most of these are built) has implemented a fix on all trans built after 10/23/08. Well apparently there are still a lot of trans built after this date that still have the same issue. Supposedly the issue deals with the clutch fluid seal rings which were either not installed correctly, nicked, and the entire assembly in which these seals ring seat was not machined properly. causing this shift flare or slip.

 

A trip to the dealer seems to yield little satisfaction in regards to this issue, with the most common explanations being "all these six speeds trucks shift different and it is jst the computer adjusting to driving coniditions. My truck has either a 2-3 or 3-4 shift flare several times per week. 3 seperate ride alongs with a tech have been unable to duplicate the issue ( nothing happens when YOU want it to). The dealer is ware of the issue tell me if they can't replicate it they can't do anything. The best answer they can give me is keep driving it, you have a 5 yr powertrain warranty and "just hope it grenades itself and then we can give new a new transmission. I don't think this is an accpetable answer to anybody and an currently trying to get GM to send an engineer out to take a look at my truck and discuss how this can be resolved, but I am not making much progress

 

Sorry for the rant but you may be experiencing the same issue. Oh and this conidition is supposedly most likely to occur with a "cold" transmission which would make sense in your case as you are just pulling out the driveway.

if you keep having an issue. bring it in and get a work order. even if they find nothing, if you have 10 work ordersand your transmission fails or slips in the future. it will be preety tough for gm to not help you out. seeing that you have brought it in multiple times for the same issue. hope this helps...good luck!

just got back from the shop (dealer)

 

i was told that there is nothing wrong and that what i was experiencing is simply the torque converter engaging/disengaging.

 

i am not entirely satisfied with this answer and am going to contact other area chev service departments.

 

by the way, does anyone know where i can find the TSB that adresses this issue so that i can reference it by number?

trans slip to warm up the drivetrain when the truck is cold, my truck will rev pretty high before shifting if its far below operating temp

Sometimes service advisors use words that they think will be over the customers head and will allow them to move on. Yours is one of those. I love it when they do that to me.

 

I am a licensed mechanic, have been since the very late 70's, spending the majority of my career on Dodge transmissions. Does the convertor lock up in 3rd gear in the 6 speeds? Does it even lock up in 4th? If you are simply experiencing the TC engaging/disengaging, then it must be defective. TC do not engage/disengage. They are never in a neutral state if in correct repair. The mere fact that it is disengaging means it is defective and must be replaced.

 

Does the lockup even happen on a cold engine anyways?

 

Leave the truck there overnight, and insist that you be the one to drive the truck FIRST thing in the morning. Make sure the truck is left outside, and if possible, you take the keys home (I have actually had a dealer drive the car before I got there once, thus negating the first run in the morning issue, caught them by the mileage). Take the trans tech out before the dew is off the truck and show him the issue. Do not be afaid to pepper him/her with questions if they try to sluff it off as being just the TC engaging/disengaging if you know the TC does not lock up in those gears at that engine/trans temp normally.

    • Most thermostatically controlled ATF systems use a 'wax' pill just like the one in your water thermostat. They work on the expansion volume of the wax and the pill is constructed in such a way as to limit the travel to remain within that range. This means it has an opening temperature often called the 'cracking temperature' and a fully open temperature. For whatever reason oil is designated by it's fully open temperature and water by it's cracking temperature.    Between the two it the "Regulating Temperature" The entire range is about 20 F from closed to open. In your example the lower limit, opening point of 145 F then has a fully open temp of 165 F and a throttling temperature of 155 F.    Thing is, the throttling temperature needs two things to work properly. Enough system load high enough to reach the minimum and a heat sink (cooler/exchanger) large enough to prevent any load applied from exceeding the fully open temperature.    If your system exceeds the fully open temperature it is screaming MORE COOLER.    Here is the silly part of the whole thermostat system where the oil is cooled/heated by the radiator. Nothing is flowing to that system until the oil temperature reaches the cracking temperature unless it is equipped with a minimum flow bypass orifice or a bypass built into the seating surface of the plunger. That system meant to get it up to temp quicker isn't doing a thing until WORK drives if from ambient to cracking temp. One a cold winter day, like zero F, it may never get hotter than about 110 F. Sometimes not even that.    People forget or are young enough to not know that until this millennia transmissions were cooled by the radiator cold tank alone and without a thermostat at all.  In the 50's they weren't even cooled. OEMs learn everything the hard way.    When an OEM tells you the trans "Works best" between 175 F and 220 F it means works best for THEM. The transmission thermostat is fuel play. If you watch you trans temps like I do you will learn that it may take a hundred miles if you are not towing and not driving more than say 55-60 mph on a zero F day to even reach 120 F and it might sit there all day if it's colder. Yet if functions perfectly over about 100 F. It may need to get a bit warmer for the fuel and spark maps to go without an multiplier.    Worry more about too hot. Use a cooler large enough to put that thermostat in range.         
    • Around 2008 if memory serves they took sulfur out. That was when diesel went up. 
    • Question for you Grumpy, why is diesel so much more than gasoline? Seems to me that it may be slightly a little less refined than gas and it doesn't have 10% alcohol which presumably lowers the price of gas

    • How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.
