6.0 Procharger For Towing?

Wanting to tow a much bigger trailer than what I am towing now and really need more power. Does anyone have any experience with the procharger for a 2000 6.0 in a 3/4 ton Suburban?

Personally, I like the positive displacement type blowers rather than the centrifugal...But I'm biased :thumbs:

 

It will certainly give you more power either way.

But are they intercooled? I believe they are more expensive too? I would definitely need it to be intercooled for heavy towing.

Mine is...I don't think Magnuson sells them without one. The heat exchanger mounts up front in front of the AC and radiator, and the intercooler basically replaces the intake manifold and sets underneath the supercharger, sandwiched between the engine and the screws/rotors.

 

The main thing I like about it is, it's at full boost at 2000 rpms or so. Unlike the centrifugal ones that build boost as RPM rises (although centrifugals make more power on the big end...Not where you need the power when towing anyway in my opinion).

 

Finding somebody that still makes a kit for a 2000 6 liter may be your biggest hurdle though. No matter which route you take.

Whipple or Magnuson...But like I said. You're probably going to have a hard time finding a bolt-on kit for a 10 year old application. :thumbs:

Whipple doesn't list one but I did e-mail them. Magnuson lists one as non-intercooled, but also has instructions for an intercooled version on the same page:

Whipple is just now getting back into the game...From my understanding they got royally boned a few years back. Be nice if they got really big again. Twin screws are nice and whiny. :thumbs:

 

Mine is pretty dang quiet.

So I just came from the Magnacharger website, and the installation manual clearly states on page 2: " Our Magna Charger kits are designed for 4.8 and 5.3 liter engines with stock components in good mechanical condition only, which will not be used for towing or any other heavy duty applications."

 

Now I'm going to seriously look at a supercharger once I save up enough money for it. But I also use the truck for towing my boat and other stuff once in a while. Never more than a 5000lb load. But now I'm a bit skeptical. As fun as forced induction would be on a daily basis...I don't want to damage my vehicle because I hooked on a trailer. What gives? :lol:

Its nothing more than the fact that towing is hard on the motor, then u add PSI to a motor whos original intention was not to be FI.

 

I think more over, its the tuning issues vs the actual cylinder pressure. These kits are tuned for performance, not for increased towing capacity. I think if you were to keep the tune and the boost pressure conservative you would be fine.

 

And to the OP defnately twin screw over centrifugal.

Good find. Mine is used only for towing and otherwise just sits in the driveway. The only reason I am looking for more power is to tow better.

IMO, they might just be covering their asses. You will also void your Magnacharger warranty if you pulley-down a size or two (to increase boost), get a tune (other than what they supply), or in any way modify your motor beyond stock (other than the supercharger of course).

 

I know that I voided my warranty when I put it on because my engine already had headers, plus I pullied down and got a full-on dyno/street tune.

I'm with wingnut. I was looking at a twinscrew for these trucks I guess it was whipples site.. (vortech makes a intercooled twin screw too) and it specifically said for increased towing capacity. Like wingnut said, its just covering their asses.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
