Painting Dash

hello guys i did use the search bar and only found three topics, one wasn't about painting, the other had no replies and the other help on how to do it but nobody said how it turned out.

 

so i was wondering if anyone had painted there dash pieces in there truck?

 

how does it hold up?

 

and what kind of paint did you use?

because i found a nice plastic paint that it pretty close to matching my truck color

i don't know a whole lot about it, and i haven't done it but id be worried about painting my dash because i see you live in Canada, and with the cold id be afraid it paint would contract and crack or something, but i guess if you had good plastic paint and a really good base coat of adhesion promoter and primer it might be alright.

I painted my vents and the little piece under the interior door handles and the cd compartment, and I've thought about painting the dash bezel over the radio and the cluster. It's held up just fine, but I didn't sand before I painted it, I'd recommend sanding it down really good first. krylon fusion is a beast to.

thanks guys i think i might just find a little piece i could paint and see how it holds up. because im still a little worried about how it will hold up

the stuff i was looking at is for plastics, and plastic chairs, metals, wood and a whole bunch of other stuff it says it doesn't need primer and no clear coat so i will just try it somewhere

 

do you know where i could try a little bit, i was thinking of the inside of the inside fuse lid

I've found the best paint is some etching primer then paint. But that fusion is still good and I used it to paint my valence and bumper caps, so it should hold up just fine inside the cab, imo.

Are you talking about the whole dash, or the aluminum colored pieces? Also you could use adhesion promoter, and then any paint you wanted

i was thinking of painting little things to accent the truck like the dash trim that runs around the radio, steering wheel, and by the 4x4 selector

and on my over head counsel's compartment lids, so pretty much areas with low to no traffic areas except for the pieces on the doors that are around the window switches.

 

i'll try to make it to town tomorrow and get some paint and start expirementing

Well if you're going to paint it, you better get started because cold weather is coming and painting in the cold = terrible paint job.

ya right now its about -1 ish with barely any snow, i am lucking to have a heated shop that i can put the whole truck in, last case scenario i have the basement lol. dad did not like the smell of paint in the house for a couple days when i painted some plastic in the engine bay

Somewhere that's above 55 and about average humidity will suffice just fine. To be honest with you, I was 16 once, not too long ago and I wanted to paint my dash, but I ended up painting the covers behind the door handles and I'm glad that's all I did. But, it's your truck so more power to you.

ya what technique should be used to make it more durable?, lots of light coats of paint or a couple heavy coats and let each coat stand about half an hour to an hour?

 

the temperature would probably be about 25 degrees Celsius ( shop stove is a 45 gallon barrel so i can get it to throw heat)

I usually do light coats spaced about five minutes apart until I'm satisfied with color. Just make sure you sand your plastic or atleast clean the hell out of it first. If you try to paint over something that still has traces of armor-all on it it will look like straight hell. Trust me, I screwed up my vents the first time I painted them, had to redo them. And don't direct heat straight at the paint either, that will make it dull as shit.

Look in my garage, that's the best I got right now. No close ups, but they're pretty shiny because I put so many coats on em'

that looks nice does the vents and the pieces by the door just pop out and how does the area around the handles hold up with rubbing against it to pull the handle
