2004 Suburban Won't Start

My 'Burb won't start, and it's my primary family vehicle.

 

Here are the particulars I know: Turns over fine, smells like gas after trying, anti-theft light is not lit on dash. It did this once the week we bought it (used in April 2010) and it has not done it again until today Ran fine yesterday.

 

Truck details: 5.3 flex-fuel motor (but I never use E85), standard push-button 4WD.

Press the gas pedal slightly as you're trying to start it and see if it takes off.

Is the "Check Engine" light on?

I tried to start it again, and it did try to catch once or twice, but it did not seem to coincide with slightly pressing the gas pedal. The check enginge light is not on. The service 4WD message came on again (it has been intermittant the last two weeks) and I have a slow leak in a tire that cause a low pressure light again.

It's at Meinekie now. He says it is pumping too much fuel and popping off the injectors. He wants to run some tests to see if it's the pump or the computer. Shouldn't be too much longer. Does this sound viable?

Check the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail on the driver side of the engine. It is located about mid-engine, is about the size and shape of a silver dollar and has a small vacuum line attached to it. If it is defective fuel will be drawn through the vacuum line directly into the air intake manifold causing a rich condition. It happened to my 2000 Suburban. I smelled like gas when starting the engine due to fuel leaking out of the regulator and vacuum line. It ran terrible. I replaced it (it's an easy job) and everythibg was fine.

The mechanic said he checked the regulator, but it's definitely the pump unit. He cut me a break on the price, which now comes in at just over $600 installed.

600 bucks does seem a llittle high, when mine goes I'm going to cut a hole in the floor it to get to it.
