Command Start

hey guys, i am in need of some help. when i bought my truck last year it came with an aftermarket command start, but it was installed by the dealer. it worked all last year but it now it doesn't work. I had my truck at a shop to get a body lift put on in the spring, and when they hooked the battery back up the silent alarm came on. ( doesn't let the truck turn on ). Some how they un programmed my command start, because thats what they thought was wrong. but it wasn't so they made me stay in the city, which is 1 1/2 away from home, and they hauled my truck to the dealer in the morning to get the computer reset. I told them to reprogram my starter. i tried it in the summer and the command start worked. but no for some reason it won't work now. if you want to use it you have to do a pain in the ass procedure, just for it to work. when i press the start button the truck sounds like it starts then shuts off and then just turns over for long time or untill you hit the brake to shut it off.

I have looked at the remote and there is no serial numbers or anything,

there is no control box under the dash like all of my buddies trucks,

i talked to the gmc dealer and they said to talk to the dealer for the remote control, they said to talk to the gmc dealer, or book an appointment which is 1 1/2 away from my place and they are only open mon - fri. so i would have to skip school.

Im pretty sure its an AUTO START. there is no brand or anything.

if anybody knows anything any help would help and be greatly appreciated

i would like the command start so i can start the truck during last class so i don't have to sit out in the parking lot after school, in my cold truck waiting for it to start. ( the weather gets around -30, so it would be nice to come out to a warm truck, )

Most of the models I am familiar usually either have a tachometer feedback loop or detect motor start from the voltage rise when the alternator starts charging. It sounds like the remote start is not bypassing the the factory fuel kill from what you describe. Normally, all is assumed to be well, the truck starts, the computer thinks it's being stolen, and kills the fuel. The remote starter senses a no start condition, and retries. You HAVE to have 2 boxes - one to bypass the anti-theft device (usually has a key in it) and another to do the starting. Look for a single wire around the headliner and follow into the dash or check in the dash near the steering column where the RFID loop is by the ignition switch. The remote starter is after market - so it must be around the steering column. Sounds like you've lost the programming to your extra key but no way to be sure. Good Luck!

One more thing, to verify the lost key theory, hang your ignition key next to the ignition switch, and then test the remote start. If it works, then you've either lost your other key (inside one of the boxes) or something is amiss with the anti-theft bypass unit. If it doesn't start (acts as before) then it's anyones guess and you'll need to identify the manufacturer. Again, good luck!

ok thanks alot, i'll will check all of this out today hopefully. When you said it will be around the steering column, do you mean under the plastic, and if so does the plastic just snap off?

well i looked yesterday again and found nothing. i also tried that key trick and still nothing works.

If the remote start cranked, then died with the key in the ignition then it's not what I originally thought. When the remote start is installed they usually place a transmitting antenna inside the steering column - the antenna wraps around the ignition switch to pick up the RFID (radio frequency identification) code from your key. The remote starter has 2 - 3 circuits it must energize. 1 is the ignition (possibly 2) and the starter. On most vehicles, they boost the ignition voltage during cranking due to the low voltage coming from the battery during cranking. This could be the other reason why it starts then dies. You may be losing your ignition voltage after it starts. So the key wouldn't matter. Here is a link to the bypass unit I was referring previously. THe antenna part is where the copper has the nearly clear plastic part over it. It doesn't have to be clear.

Notice the operation when you activate the the remote starter: Does the dash lights come on first? Does everything look identical as if your were starting the vehicle (except for possible delays between key on to starting)? The remote starter IS IN the dash. Usually just forward of the steering column. Other than being there and tracing wires. I really can't help much more. I would look for a blown fuse in the remote starter wiring harness. They are in addition to the vehicle fuses. You should be able to see the remote starter by looking up and under the dash. It will NOT be easy to get to. My installs are completely invisible except for maybe the antenna wire. Best of luck!
