Steering Rack Bushinga

Alright,

Truck is at an independent mechanic right now. They found the inner tie rods worn out and about a half inch of play in and out on my driver side hub bearing. They also said that the bushings on my steering rack are worn out and allowing the whole rack to move about half and inch up and down when I turn. The mechanic then told me that they do not have replacement bushings and that I have to buy a whole new rack in order to fix this issue! Is this true or has anyone encountered and fixed this? I'm really ticked off if so that GM doesn't make a replaceable unit for that. Thanks

Its a 2006 silverado 1500 crewcab 2wd btw.

Thanks.

If I were you, I'd check the bushing play myself. If you want to, sure, you can deflect those bushings

alot more than you would think that you should be able to but it is hurting nothing. I'd guess that the

bushings are fine. I might also question the inner tie rod ends being loose as I have yet to see one wear

a set out, on the 2WD trucks. Just sayin'. :seeya:

And yes, as far as I know, the bushings are not serviced seperately of the gear at this time.

I told them to go ahead with the hub and inner tie rod, but if the rack bushings are an issue I could understand why. When I cycle the steering back and forth, there is a lot of metallic popping. The mechanic who diagnosed the bushing issue also identified that as the cause of the noise. I'm not saying he couldn't be wrong, but I have never ridden in another truck that makes noise like mine.

Have you added the washers to the crossmember yet as outlined in a GM TSB for the 2wd GMT-800 trucks? My truck was making a popping sound that I thought was the balljoints before I added the washers and cleared some of the rubber coating away from the bolt holes.

What about something like this?

I haven't gotten up under there close enough to look, but is the old bushing possible to drive out if I found a suitable replacement?

On rockauto, they list a rack and pinion bushing as a part on models 2002-2004 for sure. Did the 2wd racks change considerably from those models to the 06 ones or could that part be used? Thanks
