Command Start

I have a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 4wd with a 5.3l engine. When the outside temperature is at about -25 Celcius (-10F) or lower the command start will engage, the engine will run a short time then stop running. This happens if the vehicles block heater has been plugged in or not. The engine easily starts with a key. This situation also trips a check engine light that according to onstar is a emissions check for new vehicle break in. The command start will not work while this check engine light is on.

Any ideas as to why this happens and how it should be corrected? My local dealer hasn't been able to fix this.

Remote start is setup to not work on all GM vehicles when a "Check engine" is on, along with some other issues too. My wife saw this with an HHR where she ran into the loose gas cap issue where a loose gas cap would cause the "Service Engine Soon" would should in the DIC. So the dealer should be able to pull codes from the computer to see why the check engine light is coming on. Do you know what they got from that?

Also the remote start is TIMED to run only 10 min (unless you extend it), so when you say "it runs for a short time then stops" is it at the 10 min mark? Or does it stop prior to the 10 min. because an error is noted and the CEL lights up?

And +1 to the above post about the Check Engine Light disabling remote start.

The run time is less than 10 seconds.

i have the same thing happening with my remote start. i started it, it turns over, and then 10 seconds later it shuts the engine off. same thing, with the block heater plugged in or not, and i do not have a check engine light on. (-30 C)

i am taking it into the dealership in the morning and will post what the retards figure out.

If there is any ECM error codes, the remote start will not work. If the SEL is kicking on, there's an issue of some kind. Could be as simple as a bad gas cap.
