All Terrain Package & 20" Wheels

Has anyone noticed that GMC now offers the "All Terrain" Package with 20" wheels? It's called the Sierra Off Road Package. I am pretty sure

I remember seeing something somewhere that GM recommends not driving off road with your 20" wheels...

Seems kinda strange to me.

where does it say not to take it off road in the manual ? that is very strange.. however I needed to take my old 2002 tahoe off road a few times on 23's .. and it worked on gravel but not much else .

I believe the problem is with the lower profile tires .. park your 20" wheels on top of a big sharp rock, and look how much your tire "folded" in on the rim .. . on 18's you have more play .. 2 inches more to be exact ..

actually you have 1 more inch of tire to "fold" cause 20inch is the diameter! so if you have 18inch diameter... it gives you 1 more inch on each side and when driving only one side is actually making contact with the road.. and yes i'm pretty sure its because of the tires... low profile tires arent for off-roading.. bigger tires means more shock absorbing from the tire.. meaning less stress on the rims and on the truck... and low profiles tires are stiffer.. driving off the road you need softer tires at lower psi with more interior volume to adapt to the terrain for better handling so the tire wont slide... thats the reason why <18inch are recommended for off-roading but 20's arents.. unless you're running 20" wheels with 37" tires.. there i dont see a problem! anyway i'm not a specialist or anything.. just my point of view

If you read in the manual (i have a '10 sierra) it says 20" rims are not for off road use. Which i would assume means the factory ones with the factory tires.

Hmmm interesting... I want to know what they look like.... Wonder if its just a 20" version of whats on it now...

That being said... its saying don't take the 20" rims off road if you're doing some hard core off roading. Now for the average person, we aren't taking our new trucks on a rock climbing trail. We're going down the muddy field road, or possibly through a few holes... Nothing major. So 20" rims aren't that big of a deal. That extra sidewall does give you a nice little cushion and keeps your rims from getting scratched up as well.

I'm currently on the fence about switching to GMC 20's or sticking with my 17's. I like the extra sidewall because I do a fair amount of off road / rough driving. But GMC 20's look so purty!
