2000 Gmc Denali Whats Some Good Mods?

Recommended Posts

So I just picked up a 00 Denali, has the 5.7 Votrec with almost 150k on it. Bought it mostly for snowy days and to pull my boat with during the summer so its not really a DD. I always like to do some mods to all my cars/trucks though and this thing could def use a little upgrading. I know its heavy etc but just wondering what some simple things I could do that these motors respond well too or things I specificly shouldnt mess with would be. Still learning about this truck so any info would be great! Oh it has a Flowmaster muffler already so im sure theres 1 hp lol

Your truck stock has 255 HP, if you would have spent a little more and got a 2001, you would have 325 HP,

The amount of money you would need to spend on "mods" to get the same amount of power would be way more than if you would have just spent a lil extra and got the 2001 and up ...

How much power do you think you need ? It will still pull a boat just fine....

anybody? Nobody knows what the 5.7 vortec likes for mods??

You must have the OBS denali if it has the 350 5.7L Vortec. I would say get a chip with a custom tune and air intake filter for it. I would do a CAM on it if it had less miles. If you get it rebuilt then defenetly do a CAM and intake. Dont mess with Hypertech or any handheld programmer, they dont do much.

Yeah, go back and get the 6.0 man..

If you would've got a 2001 with a 6.0, I'd help. They make easy power with just a tuner.

Yeah Im well experienced with the LS motors Ive had 4 cars with them in them, the last being a 10 second full weight NA LS1, I know they make great power from minor mods, but never had a vortec motor before. The 6.0 denali's are like 3x the amount I paid for this one around here. I just wanted something I could pay cash for. Like I mentioned, not a daily driver just looking to wake it up a little. I've been hearing from a couple other ppl I know too that a nice tune helps out. How do they react to a nice set of Long Tubes?

My 96 5.7 responded well to a CAI, catback, Underdrive pulleys, and a Hypertech. Noticed a bump in power with the 93 octane tune. Had planned on stepping up the rocker from the stock 1.5s, (Crower) With what I know now, I would scrap the hypertech and go with a tuned pcm, and Add headers. Even shorties will make a difference compared to the monifolds on those engines.

I also would go with a corvette servo and a 4th apply piston and cover for the transmission. I got mine from Oregon Performance.

Thanks for the info, I think ill start with a cai and a tune. Throw on some headers if I think its not good enough.

I have the 05 Denali 6.0 Vortec also, and so far Ive added the K&N intake system & magnaflow exhaust with turn-down. I like the exhaust sound, but not sure if the Intake does much. The headers are pricey for this engine, but not sure those would add much either. Who tunes for the 6.0 and how would it be done? (Road tune, or send in ECU)?

I do my own tuning with my diablo, because I like to tinker, and it offers just as much power as a custom tune with the parameters adjusted correctly. But, most people recommend a custom tune either, nelson, wheatley, blackbear, waitforme, there's many out there.

I would go with Wester's. Butch's email [email protected] The other tuners listed have good reps as well.

Butch is on the Denali Truck forum. Tell him Sly recommended him to you. He has a lot of info on our Denali trucks. He can send you a programmed computer so you can keep your stock one. The Denali Turuck forum has a wealth of information on it. Between the Silverado SS fromum, the GM truck forum and the Denali forum you can get just about any answer to a problem.
