This past couple of weeks I noticed my temperature gauge wasn't working well - it sometimes worked, sometimes not - or that the engine was running very cold (doubtful).

Today, my 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE2 5.3L threw a P0116 code. Any relation or is this something else?

I have modified my engine block plug and replaced the end with a generic one to remove the temperature sensor. This cause that?

You're talking about the block heater right? That you removed the temp sensor on the plug for it. Yes you can get a code set. Don't know if it's that specific one, but I do know there is a problem. Thta't one reason why the stock units don't come on until is pretty damn cold.

Yeah, I cut the block plug heater off at the end (where the temp sensor is) and presto - block heater comes on when I say.

So, that code is for the block heater plug end then? (phew!)

I have two pickups (2012 and 2000) both with 5.3L engines and an 2006 Impala SS w/5.3L. the last couple of days the Impala has shown the temp code P0116 and we had the block heater plugged in because it has been -25c to -30c but was only -15c the last couple of nights. It has a factory block heater but it doesn't have a temp sensor on the plug (it's original and I'm the original owner and haven't changed it) How can I reset the code? I will remember not to plug it in when the temp is above -18c.

Disconnect the battery for a bit

Get a handheld scanner that has the capability of clearing codes

Find an auto parts store that will do it for you
