Is Power Secured To Usb Port & Cigarette Lighters When Truck Stops

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a 2011 Sierra last week, and I'm trying to figure out if power is secured to the USB port and cigarette lighters after I turn off the truck. It seems like it's still connected, but surely they wouldn't design it so these stay connected, right? (especially the ones inside the center console) I tried searching but really didn't see anything relevant.

yes all the power ports are hot all the time, key on or off.. the USB shuts down after about 3 minutes when the cars data network goes to sleep..

I was afraid of that. Is there any way to change that, or am I just going to have to get used to unplugging my phone charger when I'm done with it?

well, you don't really need to unplug it, the LED on the charger might drain your battery in 8 - 10 years..

now depending on your phone, most newer smart phones/blackberry's/ etc use 5 volt chargers, so what I did was to get one of these: (as USB ports are rated at 5 volts).

and a retractable USB cable:

I leave the usb port in the center console port and the usb cable in the port.. no biggie

I also have one on the center console stack under the HVAC controls, I removed the plastic cover deal over the power port (it has a pin on the bottom like a watch band) and I use it to charge my ipod, ipad, phone, bluetooth head-phones, broadband Mi-Fi device, and some other toys. I've had 4 devices in the car charging overnight, no issues.

Thanks for the help! I ordered one of those things from Amazon.com for a whopping $6.57 with shipping. And if the iPod connector port really does shut off 3 min after I turn off the truck, I can just leave that thing plugged in indefinitely

you have nothing to worry about- a charger wont kill the battery. to quell youre fears a little more i have a jump starter for my truck in case i kill the battery and one of the ways to charge it is through the cigarette lighter. i leave it plugged in overnight and she starts right up in the morning. cars have been built like this forever.
