Increased Torque Management In 07+ Models

I read over and over how there is so much torqe management on these new trucks and suvs ...

 

I say great! bring it on ... Lets see how long these 5.3's and 6spds will last now ,, maybe we'll all pull 250K miles before we see tranny rebuilds..

 

Seems like the GMT 800's, after about 130K miles, it was expected to have a tranny failure...

 

Maybe my 2010 Silverado is "slower" than my 2002 Tahoe with the same 5.3 engine, but lets see how long the tranny's last .. IF mine goes at 120,000 miles, than shame on me I should have just gotten the BB tune right out the box .. .

I've not read of 1 6-speed failure on any of the 3 boards I frequent

I spoke with the transmission guy at our local dealer a while back. He said he had worked on quite a few 6-spds. If you think about it... how many posts have we seen for folks blowing 06+ 4L60/70s? They changed to some stronger/redesigned components about that time (e.g., sunshell). The 6L80 is rated stronger though, so it should last longer. It shifts more though, so who knows what that means for clutch wear (?). It's rated similar to the old 4L80 for raw torque input, so it's not going to go "bang" under a hard launch as easily.

I wonder if it is easy to substitute a 6 speed automatic transmission in a truck originally equipped with a 4 speed auto? Would it bolt right up? It would require changing the gear indicator and reprogramming the ECU, but that's a relative minor issue. Anyway the 6 speed with the 3.73 rear end would be awesome!

 

What is the cost of a 6 speed vs 4 speed replacement transmission? Does GM sell them new or rebuilt?

Been a few 6 speed swaps over on performance trucks. Looks a bit involved when you hit electronics and add ons to make it work right and the cross member has to be flipped and modified.

Can't one just replace the cross member with one that is used with the 6 speed transmission? I assume it bolts on? It would be nice if GM made a 6 speed conversion kit for those whose 4 speed tranny needs replacing or rebuilding.

Thats why I ordered my LTZ with the 3.42 gear. I was tempted to go 3.73 as my 2004 had, but after test driving one with the 6 speed and 3.42 I was very impressed with the bottom end performance.

Now I just hope it gets built and delivered before the incentives drop off!

My '03 Tahoe (thats a GMT800 right?) 5.3 has 177K and the 4spd shifts perfectly. They truck runs and drives great. It gets regular synthetic oil changes (about every 4k miles) and the trans, brakes, and radiator/cooling systems flushed at my trusted shop with a BG Flush system about every 3 years. So I wouldn't say failures are expected on gmt800's.

 

My 2010 Sierra with 5.3 6spd is not slower, even with torque management, then my '03 5.3 Tahoe. My Sierra is on par with my wife's '05 Denali with the 6.0. No bull. That, I'm sure, is due mostly to my Sierra being lighter and maybe a little to do with gearing.

 

Your 02 Tahoe should not be faster than your 10 Silverado.

Dang. He say's it's a stock converter, but it sure doesn't sound like it. The rpms barely drop.
