Things To Check/do On A 96 S10

The better half's sister has a 1996 S10 with @ 30,000 miles on it. The truck has sat for long periods (months to nearly a year once) outside and unprotected. She is wanting to 'catch up' on the maintenance of the vehicle.

I am making plans to drain/flush/change/etc all the fluids except engine oil (engine oil has been changed every 3 months except when it sat for nearly a year). Battery is new. I just put a new serpentine belt on it (no odd signs of wear on belt, idler bearings feel in good shape).

On the tranny fluid: drain and fill, or drain, change filter, and fill? Rear end, just drain and fill OK?

Brakes feel good and pads/drums look ok. Am planning on draining master cylinder and lines all the way back to each wheel.

Other than the dex-cool is a slightly orange color, nothing funky in the coolant but am planning on a flush and fill there.

Air filter is not only clean but is the original!

Spark plug cables, when bent around a finger, appear good but is this good enough of a test or should I plan on simply replacing them?

Any recommendations on getting this truck back up? The engine is running smooth, tranny shifts smooth (automatic), no unusual squeaks, etc.

Did I read that right...30,000 miles on a '96?? Just a little less than my '96 Sonoma (195k). Looks like you've covered most of it. Only thing I would add is to check all the rubber hoses - radiator, vacuum, etc; things that are affected more by age than miles.

Thank you for the information!

Have Sea Foam on hand at all times, will dose the tank and fill it.

Nearly forgot about the vac lines, thats why I asked in here! Radiator hoses look very good, will check them more closely when I drain the coolant and flush it.

Y'all have a good one! Appreciate the help!
