I hate the look of gold or brass on a vehicle. I have removed the tailgate bowtie and replaced the bowtie on my grill with a chrome one. Now on to the hub caps.

Here is what I started with. I masked off the area around the bowtie with black electrician's tape and blue painter's tape.

I started the gold removal with a red scotch-brite pad.

After removing all of the gold, I polished the remaining aluminum with buffing compound to remove the deeper scratches from the scotch-brite.

Next, I further polished with fine cut polishing comound.

Next, a coat of wax to shine it up nice.

Done. And it looks much better.

I never would have noticed this until seeing this cap separated from the wheel, it looks strangely like the old '67-'75 GM dog dish caps like I have on my K5.

Those would look a lot better if you removed the gold. :D

Seriously, though, the resemblance between the two is amazing. I would have to guess that it was intentional on the part of some designer at Chevy, going for a little bit of retro styling. Too bad most people will never notice it. Thanks for posting the pic.

Someone needs to send this to GM and tell them to stop putting gawdy gold accents on otherwise beautiful trucks :) .... totally agree, the silver bowtie looks much better!!

wow... very nicely done..... :)

amazing what difference a little colour (or lack thereof) can make!

That's a job well done there. I've always disliked the gold stuff on an otherwise silver/chrome accented vehicle. I did the same thing on my TBSS. The rear bowtie had a gold plastic insert and the wheels were the same as yours were.

I dunno...I like the gold accents. Not that the hubcaps at the top of this thread look bad, they do look nice. If the gold were something new that GM all-of-a-sudden started using, maybe I might not like it so much, but seeing little connections like that between my old Blazer and my new Silverado is kind of cool. Just my 2 cents.
